  • FEBRUARY 11 JUMPOFF BY STATE LINE AND RETURN BY WALKER PRONG Here is a hike which combines the ease of a woodland tramp on a Park Service Class A trail with the more strenuous return down a rocky and sometimes pathless stream. Those who would avoid the harder portion may return the same way they came. The rest, after feasting their eyes on the magnificent panorama from the Jump-Off, will return to the Boulevard Trail leading to Mount LeConte, then clamber down through virgin forest with soft mosses underfoot. This part of the hike permits several variations. Some will want to follow a small stream; others will be inclined to turn off the trail at a slight dip which leads through a swale. In any case, all parties are bound to converge at last on Walker Prong, a precipitous, rocky stream which tumbles between frowning cliffs and over at least one beautiful waterfall. From there on, we must clamber along the stream's banks, jump from rock to rock, and probably wade through knee-deep drifted snow. ■—-but the exercise will serve to keep us warm. The less active brethren will have returned to the cars and will bring them down to the Walker Prong bridge. Leave Dixie System at 7 A. M. and drive to Newfound Gap. Round trip driving distance about 120 miles. Total hiking distance is approximately seven miles. From Newfound Gap to Jump-Off is 3.2 miles. Take food for one meal and canteen. Boots are advisable.
