  • Elkmont began as a logging camp for the Little River Lumber Company, established in 1901. Logging company owner, Wilson Townsend constructed a railroad that carried logs on flatcars to the company sawmill at Townsend. Throughout the decade, Elkmont remained a base of operation for Little River Lumber, but as timber was depleted, Townsend began promoting Elkmont as a resort community and, in 1909, added passenger service to the logging train. Subsequently, several resorts were established on the site, including the Appalachian Club in 1910, Wonderland Hotel in 1912, and Wonderland Club in 1919.
