  • Higher Connecting the Classroom to the Real World Have you ever wondered what you could do with your major? Internships and cooperative learning offer an opportunity to find out exactly how the classroom relates to the real world. All students can benefit from the experience, but African-Americans especially benefit. African- American students are often first generation college students and the first to seek professional employment and for these students internships offer connections. An internship can offer students contacts with professionals in their fields. Susie Ray, director of WCU Career Services, says that interns have the advantage. "Employers tell me that they are most interested in applicants with career related experience. Their biggest complaint of college graduates is that often they do not have a career focus; an internship or co-op can provide that focus." Ray said. The WCU Career Services, located in McKee Building, offers assistance in obtaining an internship experience. Interested students can get information and applications from Career Services on the many available opportunities, many of which are targeted specifically at minority students. Additional and more specific information is also available in each department. The basic requirements to participate in an internship or co-op program are to have sophomore status and a 2.0 GPA. Other requirements depend on the particular program and employer.
