  • Zebulon Weaver (1872-1948) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative from western North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina Park Commission and was involved in the land acquisition process that went towards establishment of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and development of the Blue Ridge Parkway. In this letter Johnson points out Miss Sarah Hanna had complained about her failure to get the position of reporter for the Suncrest case. Johnson also states he knows the Park Commission had hired two reporters-Mrs. Shank and Mrs. Smith-and he was agreeable to employ Miss Hanna if she was satisfactory to the Commission.

TELEPHONE 5662 GENERAL PRACTICE CORPORATE AND INSURANCE PRACTICE: A SPECIALTY Hon. Zen Weaver, Asheville, N.C.,, Hon. Frank Carter, Asheville, S. C. Hon. Verne Rhodes, Asheville, N.C. September 6, 1931 Gentlemen: Re: State v. Ravensford. Miss Sarah Hanna is in my office now complaining that she failed to get the position as reporter of the Suncrest case, because of objection on the part of our firm and says Mr. Weaver's stenographer informed her to this effect, among others. not knov? what the facts I do know that the Park are as to Commission < I do what his been said, but . gaged both reporters, Mrs. Shank having been engaged very early by Judge Carter a,nd Mrs. Smith having later been engaged at the suggestion of Judge Carter. I have told Miss Hanna that the Park Corn- took the position tha/t it was paying the stenographers and had a right to name them and I, therefore, declined to assume any responsibility other than that I wanted a. competent reporter. I wish to say to you gentlemen now that according to my understanding, it is the duty of the Park Commission to furnish the compensation for the appraisers and also to arrange to have the cases reported by two reporters, and I do not wish to be embarrassed about the matter of court reporter. It is perfectly agreeable with me to employ Miss Hanna if she is satisfactory to the Park Commission. Very truly yours, Johnson,/smathers and Rollins, *>y Thomas L. Johnson. / A- jh-^u^~^^-^^ TLJ:S
