Champion YMCA square dance team at the Mountain Youth Jamboree

Although the clog step was brought to America by Scottish and Irish settlers, team clogging in square dance formation was first performed in Asheville, North Carolina in 1927 by the Smokey Mountain Dancers at the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Festival. The Champion YMCA provided an avenue for this traditional style of dance to continue with Saturday night square dancing. This 1959 photograph shows the YMCA senior cloggers during the Mountain Youth Jamboree in Asheville, North Carolina.
