  • Early postcards illustrated life and scenery in western North Carolina. This “Bird’s Eye View of Waynesville” was made from an original photograph by Herbert W. Pelton (1879-1961). Pelton was active as a photographer in Asheville in the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s. He produced landscapes of the region including panoramic shots, a rather rare format at the time. He partnered with photographer George Masa to operate their Photo-Craft Shop in the 1920s but, within a decade, moved to Washington, D.C.
