  • Elkmont was a resort community that began as a private hunting club on land purchased from the Little River Lumber Company. Fifty acres of land were purchased to form the Appalachian Club in 1910. Originally conceived of as a hunting preserve, the club soon became popular as a family vacation destination. Families were able to ride the Little River Railroad train, shown on this map. In 1914, a second club was formed after a group of citizens purchased the Wonderland Park Hotel. Club members purchased individual hotel rooms which were also rented out, much like a today’s time share.
