WNC industrial chieftain celebrates 90th birthday

WNC Industrial Chieftain Celebrates 90th Birthday Reuben B. Robertson observed his 90th birthday anniversary characteristically Wednesday by putting in a regular day at his office in the Parkway Office Building. National Park Service Buys Sandburg Estate FLAT ROCK — Congressman Roy A. Taylor announced Wednesday that the National Park Service has accepted the option on the 242-acre Carl -* "X FRANCES BLALOCK DENTON from Canton, recording artist and gospel writer, will make her television debut this Sunday. She will appear on the "Bonnie Lou and Buster Show" at 1 p.m. on Knoxville channel 10. Accompanied bv Hilda Ruth Hill, Brenda Cog- gins and Maxine Woods, she will sing two of her comipo- tions. Sandburg Estate here. The NPS also accepted an option for an additional 5.4 acres adjoining the Sandburg property. The price of the estate is $200,000 and the additional property will cost $3,000. Taylor said that funds to cover both acquisitions are contained in a budget request now before Congress. In view of the government's legal contractural obligation, Congressional approval should be "routine," Taylor said. Plans call for the develop- j ment of the Sandburg Estate into a national historic site which will be open to the public. Mrs. Sandburg is donating most of her husband's personal and literary effects which will remain in the house. Mrs. Sandburg plans to move to a recently-acquired residence in the Beaver Lake section of Asheville in the near future. Sandburg lived at the estate from 1948 until his death in July, 1967. Broom Sale The Asheville Lions Club announced the results of its annual broom sale at its weekly meeting Wednesday. Broom sale chairman Bruce Barnes announced that sales totaled $6,- 776.33, with a net profit of $2,105.99. All profits from the sale are used by the Lions Club for service to the blind of Asheville and Buncombe County. "Then again I stayed pretty active in the early days in the mountains, logging, and helping get out the timber for pulpwood. "I never did smoke or drink," he said. "And still don't except for a rare drink I take once in a while." To celebrate, he'll be entertained by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at a reunion this weekend at Lake Logan. Now honorary chairman of the board of directors of Champion Papers, Inc., Robertson joined Champion Fibre Co. in 1907 at its lumber and pulpwood operations at Sunburst. He became president and general manager of that firm in 1925 and in 1935 when Champion Fibre Co. of Canton and the Champion Coated Paper Co. of Hamilton, Ohio merged as Champion Paper and Fibre Co., he became executive vice president of the new firm. In 1950, he became chairman of the board of directors and his son, the late Reuben Robertson Jr., became president. Five years later, when the younger Robertson became Deputy Secretary of Defense, Robertson served in the dual capacity of president and chairman of the board for two years until his son resigned the government position. He is known as one of the great industrial leaders of the soutn and also of the United States. He has served as president of the American Pulp and Paper Association, a director of the National Association of Manufacturers, as a trustee of the Committee on Economic Development, of the Institute of Paper Chemistry, and as a member of the industrial relations committee of the National Association of Manufacturers. During World War II, he served as a member of the National War Labor Board, having been appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to replace Cyrus Ching of the United States Rubber Co.
