  • The full title of this book is “With Pen and Camera thro' the ‘Land of the Sky’: Western North Carolina and The Asheville Plateau.” The 50-page book, published in 1904, is illustrated with large format photographs on each page. With text written by Holman D. Waldron, the booklet was published by the Chisholm Brothers of Portland, Maine. “With Pen and Camera” was actually a series, with titles covering various parts of the country, including the White Mountains (1896), Niagara Falls (1898), and the Pan-American Exposition (1901). The guidebook begins with a railroad trip from Washington DC and winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains, covering such popular natural wonders as Linville Gorge, Mount Mitchell , and Whiteside Mountain before heading into Asheville with photographs of sumptuous hotels and the Biltmore estate.
