  • This newspaper article from the Asheville Citizen reports on efforts to raise money by Western Carolina Teachers College alumni to build a memorial dedicated to Robert L. Madison (1867-1954). Madison, considered as the founder of Western Carolina University, served as the first president of Cullowhee High School, later Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School, from 1889-1912 and from 1920-1923.
  • Alumni Body of Institution is MAKING PLANS College Will Celebrate 45th Anniversary Next Year CULLOWHEE, Aug. 19. 1933 (Special)— The erection of a memorial to Robert L. Madison, who founded, 44 years ago, the institution that grew into Western Carolina, Teacher's college, is expected to begin soon on the campus here. Plans for the memorial were formulated in 1929, but due to a loss of funds by the college alumni association in a closed bank the project was dropped for a while. The alumni associatin is sponsoring the Madison memorial movement. A meeting was held on Wednesday evening, August, 16, at Cullowhee of the committee that was appointed at the alumni luncheon at the June commencement to make definite plans for the Madison memorial and a decision was reached that the best way to get the movement definitely on foot and raise funds for its support was to organize county alumni chapters throughout North Carolina. Members of this special committee are: David H. Brown, Cullowhee, chairman, Mrs. F. H. Brown, Cullowhee, Mrs. J. J. Wild, Webster, Roy Watson, Sylva, W. E. Bird, Cullowhee, and Mrs. C. H. Allen, Cullowhee, who is president of the Western Carolina Teachers' college alumni association. To Hold Celebration Since a special 45th anniversary celebration is planned by the college for the 1934 June commencement, the alumni association is making a special effort to have the memorial partially erected at least by next spring. It will be especially fitting to have the erection of the memorial underway since the anniversary celebration in 1934 is to center around Mr. Madison. The Jackson county chapter of the alumni association will be organized first and this group is expected to go ahead with beginning the erection of the memorial. This chapter will foster the formation of alumni groups in other counties in North Carolina. All graduates, former students, and present students of the college who are residents of Jackson county have been asked to meet in the Western Carolina library on Saturday afternoon, August 26, at 2 o'clock, for the purpose of organizing the Jackson county chapter of the college alumni association. Letters have been sent to all those interested be Miss Addie Beam of the
