Two great mountain ranges—The Smokies on the west, and the Blue Ridges on the east —run the length of this area, together forming the climax of the entire Appalachian system and the highest land upthrust in eastern America. So extensive is this region, that you can have a mountain all to yourself. It is a land of tumbling streams, waterfalls and lakes, including the TVA developments; of vast hardwoods forests which include more kinds of plants than are found in the whole of Europe. May and June see the brilliant display of wild flowers; October is the "leaf season" which is so popular. It's COOL in these uplands. Temperature decreases at the rate of 5 degrees with each 1,000 feet in elevation, and North Carolina's mountains rise to nearly 7,000 feet. Days are sunny and sparkling, suited to outdoor activities most of the months; nights are crisp and refreshing. The area is highly accessible through modern roads, most spectacular of which is the Blue Ridge Parkway shown on this map. The region is dotted with resorts suited to every taste and pocketbook. The Appalachian Trail and many recreational developments invite out of door living and activity.
