  • January 31, 2014 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Staff Reports NAM Christia Ee n Henderson AGE: 19 EA Junior MAJOR: English witha Concentration in Professional Writing oe a DREAM JOB: My dream job up until this year was definitely | to be an actress. This year has changed mea lot, but I think that find- ing that acting was some- thing I loved to do but not something I wanted to pursue as a career was probably one of the big- gest. Now however, I think my dream job would probably be to be able to write novels and poetry for a living. That is if we're dreaming here! ASPIRATIONS: I think my biggest aspiration is to be a part of something that helps to change the world for the better. I want my life to mean something and I can think of no better way to spend it than help- ing people when I can and advocating for them. HOBBIES: Although it is not some- thing I want to pursue as a career anymore, I still love to act and sing. I hope that one day I will be able to be involved with community theater again because it is one of my greatest passions! But in my spare time, I love to read, write, and do crafts with mom. OTHER CLUB INVOLVEMENT: A3 NEWS Other than The West- ern Carolinian, lama part of the Truthwriters, Nomad, IRIS, and the Vagina Monologues. To elaborate, Truth- writers is a slam or spoken word poetry group that uses the writ- ten word to advocate for social justice. The Nomad is WCUs student publication jour- nal (which is currently taking submissions of po- etry, fiction, non-fiction, and academic writing as well as art!). IRIS stands for In- dividuals Recognizing Identities and Sexuali- ties, and they strive to give all of our students a safe, tolerant and accept- ing atmosphere here on campus regardless of who they are. Finally, the Vagina Monologues is a perfor- mance as well as a move- ment that tries to raise awareness about womens _ Staff Profile: Christian issues. We also raise money and do projects for our beneficiaries, who are non-profit organiza- tion dedicated to dealing with these issues. Talso try to volunteer with the Red Zone and the Service Learning department whenever I can. PET REEVES: IT cannot stand when people chew with their mouths open. Its just something that my par- ents taught me was rude, and I could never really get past it. MOST EMBARRASSING THING TO HAPPEN TO YOU: When I was younger, I was running up and down the halls playing when I tripped right at the end of the hall, and I ended up bitting a chunk out of the wall. This accomplishment Henderson joins the marks of both of my brothers on our house. My younger brother fell off of the bed one night and put his foot through the wall while my older brother had a Photo Submitted by Christian Henderson little mishap and ended up passing out and put- ting his head through the wall. Needless to say, we are not the most coordi- nated family! Staff Reports: New year, new office The new work stations allow for individual and collaborative work. Staff Reports It is a new year, and the Western Carolinian has made some changes in our office. According to Editor-in- Chief, Laura Odom, the renovation in the office was inspired by several of her staff members. Thad heard several writers talk about work- ing to balance their class loads with the paper. I remember when I was a writer-it can be hard. I wanted to give the staff members a place where they feel like they can come work, on both their class work and their as- signments, said Odom. The office previously held two work stations which were equipped that formed an L-shape. This work station was beneficial when only two people were working. Odom and the staff re- member crowded design weekends where space was limited. In the past, design weekend consisted of several people crowd- ing around one table with laptops, notebooks and computers collid- ing. Those crowded weekends brought many good memories and were always fun, but I wanted to give people more space to work, said Odom. The office now boasts three work stations with computers as wellasa table and a seating area. Ceillie Simkiss, de- signer and photographer, stated, The way the office is set up now is sig- nificantly more comfort- able to work in for long periods of time, which for my position as designer is great. Many of the staff were shocked when they walked in and saw how things were rearranged, . but like Simkiss, many are enjoying the change. Sandra Nikula, staff writer, said, I found the office more comforting now that it has color. Odom said, We are trying to create an envi- ronment that our staff feels comfortable coming to work in. Odom is encouraging the staff to spend time in the office. We have such a great space in the Old Student Union, and I am always up there. I just want to see us, as a collective, use it more. I think it would be nice to have a place where we can all work together and learn from one another, said Odom. Johvanna Graves, in- tern, stated, The newly arranged office space cre- ated an ascetically pleas- ing working environment that promotes productiv- ity and creativity! This is what Odom was striving for. She said that many of the staff have spent time working in the office since it was rear- ranged. T am really excited to see the enthusiasm the staff has. In all honesty, I wasnt expecting much of a response to the changes in the office, but Iam enjoying the camaraderie that is ensuing because we are all working to- gether, said Odom. Odom commented that it has been great watch- ing the ways in which the staff responded to the changes. There are staff members who remember what it was like in the smaller offices on the other side of the building and have been here for the multitude of changes that the paper has gone through. While for oth- ers, this is the only office. they have known. Tt has been a great blessing to be a part of the paper for all these years and I am just happy that I have had the oppor- tunity to make the expe- rience more enjoyable for my staff and myself, said Odom. One of the things that she looks forward to seeing is the staff work- ing with one another to improve on their work. Photo by Laura Odom/STAFF Tt is nice to see that some of the staff are now comfortable with one an- other to ask questions of one another, said Odom. Odom has high hopes for the office and the staff of The Western Carolin- ian. Now that we have cre- ated a space to work in, we can work on honing our skills together. I have invited several people from around the univer- sity to host seminars for the staff, said Odom, Tam hoping we can all take advantage of these opportunities to learn as much as we can. The Western Carolin- ian is planning to host an open house in the com- ming months.
