Desk or call 7206 for details Continental breakfast included Who's Your Danny? Daytona Sunday, Jeff "Wonderboy" Gordon once again mystified the NASCAR world by winning the 1999 Daytona 500, much to the chagrin of the driver of the Miller Lite car, Rusty Wallace. It was Gordon's third victory in a row, dating back to last season. As I watched that queer- looking, rainbow colored car cross the finish line taking the checkered flag, all I could think was, "Oh boy...here we go again. NASCAR's piggyback into the new millennium did it again." Daytona $1,000,000 Extra Gordon also picked up an additional million- dollar bonus with his win on Sunday, pushing his earnings to $2,172,146—the highest payday in motorsports history. This proves my point—Gordon is an overpaid, underclass, spoiled brat. Daytona Choke? I don't think so... Some people said that "The Intimida- tor" Dale Earnhardt "choked" on the last lap as he was chasing Gordon. Dale commented after the race, "It just wasn't meant to be, I reckon. I was trying all I could do to go get to (Gordon). His car was strong off the corners." Earnhardt is one of the winningest drivers at Daytona. He has won 32 races at the two and a half-mile track, including 10 straight Gatorade Twin 125's (12 overall) and the IROC race held Saturday, in which he made a last lap pass going into turn four to capture the win. Let me also add something that Earnhardt said a few years back. He has won seven Winston Cup Championships without winning the Daytona 500. So look out. Rusty Wallace was the one who choked. Petty Cash Last season, Kyle Petty's best finish was a sixth at Watkins Glen. Following Petty's seventh-place finish at Daytona, he commented, "This is the same as winning for us." He earned $145,809 for that performance.. .compare that to what Gordon earned for winning. Well, Kyle, get on the phone to papa and start begging for some cash. You're not gonna make much more than that this year. Duke Losing Respect At the sake of saving a little face—not to have an entire article devoted to NASCAR—I will include something about college basketball. I don't like the Dookies.. .but I do pull for them over the University of No Class (North Carolina) year-in and year-out. However, after this past weekend, I am losing respect for Coach K and his talent-laden team. Last week, Duke scored 100+ against the Virginia Cavaliers. Saturday, they beat Wake Forest 102-71. It isn't the score that bothers me. What bothers me is that with a little over five minutes remaining in the game, and while holding a 40-point lead, Coach K still had Battier, Brand, and Avery in the ball game—one in which they already had well in hand. Il wasn't until inside the two minute mark that he put in his bench players, removing his stars. What took him that long? Does he feel that he needs to beat up on every team by an NBA score and 30-something to keep his precious No. 1 ranking? Whc knows.. .but it may come back to haunt him and the Blue Devils.
