  • iiiian fesituros February 17,1999 'My Favorite Martian' Just Another Silver Screen Sitcom by Alex Esmon Staff Writer Fans of the 1960s television program "My Favorite Martian" will surely be pleased with this latest film from the bottomless money pit that is Disney Corporation—at least those fans like my father who thought there were some major improvements to the 1990's version of "My Favorite Martian." This had mostly to do with the scantily clad Elizabeth Hurley and Darryl Hannah. Is there any television program made between 1950 and 1980 that Disney doesn't own the rights to? Aside from National Geographic Explorer and Masterpiece Theater, I do believe everything else falls under the cloud of Eisner Inc. Coming later this year: Sanford and Son: The Movie! (Just joking) "My Favorite Martian" is the story of an extra-terrestrial entity who happens upon our dinky planet and makes friends with the natives. Jeff Daniels stars as Tim O'Hara, the unlucky humanoid that winds up taking care of the alien. Christopher Lloyd stars as Uncle Martin—the name chosen to fit the Martian. Tim, being a TV producer, thinks the proof of alien existence is the story of the century. But in the process of trying to cap ture footage of the creature, Tim becomes friends with the Martian and—BING—we have movie title!!! Of course there are more complications to the story. The alien's ship is broken and must be fixed. Then there's the fact that Tim is trying to decide which girl he really wants to be serious about—his cameraman Lizzie (played by Darryl Hannah), or his flirtatious and fluttery reporter Brace Channing, the station manager's daughter (played by Elizabeth Hurley). "My Favorite Martian" is a funny movie which will be a big hit among the fifth grade set and the forty something set. This film doesn't offer any great insight and it doesn't raise any important social questions, but then who expects it (or wants it) to? "My Favorite Martian" - stars an amusing cast lead by the comical tendencies of Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) and the Sheepdogish attitude of Jeff Daniels (Pleasantville). Both ac tors have been in numerous feature films and both know how to get a laugh from the crowd—even if they are all under four feet tall! "My Favorite Martian" is showing in and around the greater Jackson County area. I don't recommend this film as adamantly as others, but it's a fun watch that will garner a few chuckles even from the most grown up among us. One more question about Disney: Can we look forward to a feature film version of "The Flying Nun" or should I quit holding my breath? That Sally Fields is a hoot! I think one day she'll be a big star..... ■: discountbpeak.com » m home of deijtk j>em§ If sp™ J^eok discountbreak.com ouf OfSMStM hotel mojirju on u discounthreak.com took toll-free clifeeiriio middle maul A. The band name evolved from an acronym which alternately reads "The Good Die Mostly Over Bullshit," or "God is Every Man of Blackness." They are supporting their debut, Soulfood. reviewed by such influential magazines as Billboard and singles such as "They Don't Dance No Mo'" have been lauded as an alternative to the stereotypical rap message of machismo and violence.
