Sports- The Western Carolinian Page 11 Wednesday. November 15, 1989 Southern Conference Predictions by Perryn Oglesby and the sports staff Perryn Oglesby Appalachian State at Western Carolina It will be purple day in Cullowhee as Western will battle mountain rival Appalachian State. This rivalry has been called "the best rivalry that nobody has heard of;" nobody except those many fans who love and cheer on these two fine football teams. The Catamounts of Western have played all well all season under new head coach Dale Strahm. This week they will try to end the season with a victory over Appalachian State. Appalachian is currently in second place in the Southern Conference, and should improve their record this week. Moutaineers over the Catamounts by 14 (28-14). Fred Mason Furman at The Citadel Furman is still riding high as they cliched the conference championship last week against ETSU. The Paladins are currently the number 2 team in the 1 - AA Top 20 Poll and are strong contenders to win their second National Championship. The Citadel started out the year on fire. Ever since they tied with Western, they have gone down hill. Last week The Citadel lost to VMI, who had not won a game in the Southern Conference. This loss was the low point of The Citadel's season. With The Citadel in a bad slump, Furman should roll by easily. Furman by 18 (31-13). ETSU at SanfQrd ETSU lost last week to Furman, but they should come back strong against Sanford. The Buccaneers have had a good year and head coach Don Riley should be proud of his club's efforts. Riley is in his second season as ETSU's head coach and has raised his team's level of play from last year. The Buccaneer's future is bright, and they will close their season with a big win. ETSU by 14(24-10). Marshall at Georgia Southern Marshall had a big win last week over Western Carolina, but this week they face the nation's top ranked team. Georgia Southern rolled over UT Chattanooga without any problems and will be ready for Marshall this week. Georgia Southern has already won two national championships in the 1980's, and is looking for a third this season. Marshall has a strong passing game, but it won't be enough to beat the Eagles of Georgia Southern. Georgia Southern by 14(31-17). VMI at UT Chattanooga VMI is coming off their first Southern Conference win last week when they upset The Citadel. UT Chattanooga had the misfortune of facing top ranked Georgia Southern last week, as they fell to the Eagles in convincing fashion. VMI's winning streak will end at one in the conference as the Mocs will scalp them. UT Chattanooga by 21 (28-7). Shawn Busby Tony Bolick Football/Floopball Final Poll FOOTBALL 1. Sigma Phi Epsilon 2.
