Reid Distinguished Service Awards at Western Carolina University are being accepted through Friday, Feb. 22, according to selection committee chairman Steven P. Yurkovich. The two awards, one for distinguished service by a faculty Summer Jobs Available On Mass. Coast HYANNIS, MASS. - Cape Cod, Massachusetts and the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are offering thousands of interesting summer jobs to college students and teachers from all over the country again this year. According to Bonnie Bassett, spokesperson for the Cape Cod Summer Job Bureau, "the recent explosive growth in tourism here has created unprecedented scrambling by businesses looking for summer help. The seasonal job market has never been this good"...."the jobs are waiting, now we just need people to fill them", she added. The opportunities are exciting, the pay is good, and now is the time to act while the selection is best. He was also indicted on theft and burglary charges. ITEM: Sexual assault charges against college students are being filed with increasing frequency. ITEM: An Ohio State U. student was convicted of passing $300 in counterfeit bills in the Columbus area. He was ordered to make restitution, and put on two years probation. ITEM: Two U. of Texas students were charged this fall with committing a series of robberies, reportedly to raise money for college expenses. One resigned the cheerleading squad after his arrest. Incidents such as these prompt many to comment that the Ivory Tower is no more— that campuses are now merely microcosms of society, complete with their share of student criminals. But a random sample of campus police chiefs, security directors and judicial officers reveals littls consensus on the idea. "It's a hotly debated issue, here and elsewhere," says U. of Delaware Director of Student Life Timothy Brooks. "We've certainly seen a significant rise in cases going through the judicial process here, but it's hard to say that's because crime is going up." One thing that stops Brooks and others from making a definitive statement on the issue is a lack of statistics: The only national crime report kept is the FBI-Uniform Crime Report, released annually. Although it has included a separate report on campus crime since 1980, that report covers less than 20% of campuses nationally. "It's the best measure- and the the worst, in a way," says Jerry Hudson, past president of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, and security director at the U. of North Carolina-Charlotte. "Crime patterns vary widely between two-year campuses and four-year residential schools, between public and private schools, between urban and rural schools. It would take me a month of Sundays to really figure out the numbers involved, but yes, Cont. page 7 Financial Aid Deadlines Approaching Experimental Theater To Perform CULLOWHEE - Western Carolina University Players will stage its last play of the season in the Experimental Theatre when members perform "American Buffalo" Friday-Tuesday, March 1-5. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. "American Buffalo" by David Mamet is about the friendships and personalities of three small-time crooks who plot to steal a valuable Buffalo nickel: a junk shop owner, Donny; a spaced-out young junkie, Bobby; and a "business associate" called Teacher. The play feature Patrick Manning of Charlotte as Donny, Suzanne Gortney of Black Mountain as Bobby and Patrick Williamson of Richmond, Va., as Teach. Director is Betsy Bisson of Cullowhee and stage manager/set designer is Mark Hopey of Wesser. The Experimental Theatre production is indeed experimental according to WCU's speech and theatre arts department. A woman is cast in a traditionally male role; rehearsals have included improvisation, theatre "games", role reversals and a variety of atypical techniques; and a three-sided seating arrangement will replace the usual proscenium style. "American Buffalo" won the 1976 Obie Award, the 1976-77 Drama Critics Circle Award and the 1984 Pulitzer Prize. Mamet, who wrote "A Life in the Theatre," "Sexual Perversity in Chicago" and "Glengarry Glen Ross," has been described as the foremost American dramatist now writing for the American stage. 'There is no one ... who can catch the language and the nervous system of the underbelly of American life like David Mamet," the Chicago Sun Times said. When the play recently was revived on Broadway with Al Pacino in the lead role of Teach, the New York Times called it "the best American play of the decade." The play is hot suitable for children because of its language. Tickets are $2 a person. Reservations may be made by calling (704) 227-7491 or 227-7365 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. »m-.»i.Miiiu»m.ri Deadlines are quickly approaching for summer and fall financial aid, according to The Scholarship Bank. Students with financial needs should begin now to investigate some of the more than 25,000 private aid sources, according to Steve Danz, Director. These funds are available to students with interests in a number of fields, and many do not depend on demonstrated financial need, as do state and federal funds. For example, students with an interest in business, law, and accounting can receive a stipend from the Exceptional Student Fellowship Fund, and apply to the parent corporation for full time work following graduation. The Scholarship Bank is the largest private scholarship bank in the country for undergraduate and for graduate grants and loans. The computer can help you find sources designed just for you, based on your major, occupation- For more information call 7206... al goal, geographic desires, type of aid requested (scholarships, loans, summer work), and special skills and hobbies. According to the director, the computer guarantees each student at least fifty sources of aid. It has been estimated that each package of aid represents approximately $20,000 in potential money for college. Private aid comes from America's largest foundations, corporations, unions, and private donors and totals approximately 500 million dollars, or one fourth of all available aid. Thus, it is an extremely valuable addition to the private and state moneys available. As an example of the depth of the search, the bank reports one student found thirty six sources for the most unusual major of "deep sea diver". Students wishing to use the search should send a stamped, self addressed envelope to The Scholarship Bank, 10100 Santa Monica #2600, LA, CA 90067. .or stop by First Floor U.C.
