  • ... ■-*.:■:- - OFFICES OF THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN After the tragic Joyner fire last January, The Western Carolinian has been all but out of business with the ability to print only four issues in the spring using the facilities of the Sylva Herald and the Waynesville Mountaineer. So far this summer, we have had our typesetting and production work done at the Sylva Herald (without whom...) and as of yet have not received our typography system, which is on order and should (PLEASE God!) arrive by next week. Relocated in the Student Union Building (affectionately known as OSU), the Carolinian is joined by the other organizations which were based in Joyner; the Catamount, OES, Circle K, and others. The Carolinian is the proud owner of much new equipment with which to work in coming years. The typography system is a computerized on and off line terminal typesetter with memory capabilities limited only to the size of the software, which will cut production time and worry considerably. Also, three new layout tables were constructed by the WCU Carpentry Shop and are much larger and of better design and quality than what we had in Joyner. Just for trivia's sake, six desks, twelve chairs and sixteen trash cans are here, all new. Two layout stools, and a Compugraphic Light Table came in last week to complete the design end of the operation. Add all this up with a newly refurbished building and an enthusiastic staff, and the result will be a Carolinian which will set standards for years to come. The cost of all the new equipment was over $30,000. The insurance settlement came to a total of approximately $32,000. The Carolinian and the Catamount will share a darkroom on the first floor of OSU. All of the equipment and supplies there are new, also, as the darkroom in Joyner was where most of the Carolinian and those offices above it ended up after the smoke cleared. The staff for the summer will consist of Jim Buchanan, Editor-in-chief; Tim Thompson, Business Manager; Hughes Grogan, Design and Photo Editor; Advertising Design/Illustration, Robert Brown; News Editor, Jim Wrinn; Managing Editor, Rick McDaniel; Contributing Editor, Royce Smith; and a host of all essential writers, typesetters, proofreaders, and photographers. The Carolinian's business hours are Monday through Wednesday in the afternoons and evenings. Our phone number is (227) 7267. Any contributions to our collective journalistic endeavor are appreciated and encouraged. If there is something you wish to publish, please bring it up the hill or let us get it in campus mail by Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. for publication in Thursday's paper. (top to bottom) The Student Union Building... The job is dull sometimes, but boy, those letters... Tim Thompson and Jim Buchanan are all smiles over the new offices.
