Page 24/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/October 25, 1979 Cashing checks in Cullowhee not easy By Mark Wilkins Managing Editor WCU students are finding it harder and harder to cash checks in Culowhee. Many local merchants claim thev can no longer absorb the Increasing number of bad clucks being written by students. James Smith, owner of Jimmy's Mini Mart, savs he reallv doesn't mind cashing checks for Students, but there are just too many for him to handle alone. "The situation has really gotten bad this year since the gas stations in Cullowhee stopped taking checks from new customers." he said. " 1 hesc new Student! come in here wanting rue to cash checks for them to go and buy VVh\ can't these yas stations provide this s. lor studenls'' Alter all, thev wouldn't exist if it wasn't for tlu- student! Bob Wheatlv. who operates ihe College tilt It" just off campus has other ideas about the whole matter. "1 was getting four or five bad checks a day from students when I was taking them lasl semester. I just couldn't afford to do it anymore. I'm telling students now that Homecoming begins tonight A bonfire, a hot air balloon, concerts by "The Atlanta Rhythm Section" and "Cullowhee," and the biggest parade in years all are planned as Western Carolina University celebrates homecoming October 27. Pre-homecoming events began Monday night at 7:30 p.m. with a concert by "Cullowhee" in Hoey Auditorium. The group formerly performed as "Edwards, Clark and Flynn." At 8 p.m. tonight there will be an old-fashioned bonfire and "Cat's Prowl" pep rally in the parking lot beside Whitmire Stadium. "The Atlanta Rhythm Section" will perform at 8 p.m. Oct. 26 in WCU's Reid Gymnasium. Admission will be $3 for WCU students and $6 for other persons. Events on Homecoming Day itself—Oct. 27—will begin with a 10 a.m. parade. Featured in the parade will be the WCU Marching Band and other marching bands from Sylva-Webster High School, Pisgah High School, A.C. Reynolds High School, Cherokee High School, and Swain County High School. The parade also will include an ROTC color guard follov ed by the flags of all 50 states, floats sponsored by WCU organizations and living units, the seven members of this year's Homecoming Court and last year's Homecoming Queen Laurie McLendon, visiting cheerleaders from Dudley High School in Greensboro, and the gondola and flight crew of the WLOS-TV hot air balloon, which is piloted bv "Mr. Bill" Norwood. The parade will wind through campus from the Baptist Church past the University Center to the stadium. The hot air balloon will be on display on the intramural fields after the parade, and if weather permits, will fly over Whitmire Stadium at the beginning of the 1 p.m. football game with Lenoir- Rhyne College. A tailgate picnic will be held next to the stadium parking lot from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and pre-game activities will begin in the stadium at 12:45 p.m. The WCU Alumni Association will host a reception after the name in Jordan-Phillips Fieldhousc. The Chancellor's Reception for alumni, faculty, and friends of the university will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Chancellor's home, and the alumni association will present its distinguished service awards at the annual Alumni Banquet at 7:30 in Brown Cafeteria. The final event of the day will be a homecoming dance featuring "Sugar Creek" in the Grandroom of Hinds University Center from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m. Admission to the dance will be free. ihcy should get traveller's checks because 1 don't have anv problems with them." Webb, operator of the Cullowhee Exxon agreed. "I've got M or 30 had checks from last semester that I haven't been able lo collect on," he said, "and the school won't help us to collect a cent. It's just a matter of slaving in business." 1 he owner of Jimmy's scoffed at the excuses saying that he doesn't have more than half a dozen bad checks since the beginning of the semester. According to Jimmy, the people who don't want to take checks in Cullowhee are just too lazy to take the time to write out deposit slips for the banks. "I think the businesses in Cullowhee should be a little more responsive to the people who keep them in business. If the students feel tins way also, they should start taking their business to Sylva." he said. One thing remains clear in all this. The students of WCU certainly agree with the owner of Jimmy's Mini Mart, otherwise known as the 'Bank of Cullowhee'.
