  • PAGE 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/FEBRUARY 8, 1979 sports ACC women's slots (AP)Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner Bob James announced Monday night the final pairings for the second Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball tournament. In a three-way draw between Maryland, N.C. State and Clemson—all tied for first place with identical 5-1 conference marks—Maryland received the first-round bye as the number one seed. N.C. State drew the No. 2 seeding with Clemson following in the third slot. The host Wolfpack will open the tournament in a contest with No. 7 Wake Forest at 1 p.m. today. Clemson and Duke will follow at 3 p.m., and the evening session will pit No. 4 North Carolina and No. 5 Virginia at 8 p.m. The winner in the Virginia-North Carolina match will meet Maryland in semi-final action Friday at 7 p.m. The winner of the N.C. State-Wake Forest contest and the winner of the Clemson-Duke battle will meet in the nightcap at 9 p.m. The championship game is set for 4 p.m. Saturday. Intramural schedule The intramural office has announced the intramural activities for February 6 through February 14. They areas follows: Men's four-wall racquetball "singles" will begin with registration at 6:30 p.m. February 8, in the four-wall handball courts. Equipment for the matches will be furnished and participants should come prepared to play. Soccer registration for men and women will begin Monday, February 12 at 8 a.m. and run through Tuesday, February 20. The first annual February Film Festival will be held this Friday beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Scott's blue lobby. The festival will include eight hours of continuous movies and cartoons. The movies include The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Phantom of the Opera, Dirty Harry, The Harlem Globetrotters, Bugs Bunny and Roadrunncr. The cost for the entire evening of entertainment is $1 with a Good Times Card and $1.50 without. The festival is sponsored by the Scott-Walker and Leatherwood- Helder area governments. ACC action By The Associated Press As Duke Coach Bill Foster put it, Gene Banks showed a lot of basketball savvy in the pressure-charged final minute against Virginia Tuesday night when Banks dropped in a shot with only 30 seconds left to cap a 64-63 victory over the Cavaliers. The hard-won battle was the only action for the Atlantic Coast Conference Tuesday, but tonight's line-up includes three contests. North Carolina hosts Maryland and N.C. State hosts Notre Dame.
