SEPT. 9 ONLY SPECIAL STUDENT NIGHT WITH THIS COUPON PLUS ONE DOLLAR Bird building Will students get it soon? by MARK WILKINS Editc Plans for the proposed student activity center to be housed in Bird building are still under consideration by the administration. The Student Government Association, faced with a critical lack of office space, will press hard this fall for a commitment that would turn Bird over to SGA once the new administration building is completed. The Student Government's master plan for occupation of Bird includes moving most SGA offices into the building, as well as providing office space for many of the campus' permanent clubs and organizations. Student body President Pat Murphy maintains that the move would allow the SGA to centralize their operations, resulting in improved efficiency and cooperation among students, as well as alleviating the crunch in student office space. The move would also allow the UCB to occupy the second floor offices' in the University Center which are presently occupied by SGA. According to Murphy, SGA has already been approached by organizations seeking office space if and when the move to Bird is made. However, Murphy stressed that plans for the student center are still tentative, and no definite criteria for requests has been developed. Dr. Glenn Stillion, Vice-Chancellor of Student Development, supports the idea of a student activity center. Stressing the fact that The Western Carolinian and The Catamount, among others, are operating out of aging and inadequate facilities, Dr. Stillion recognizes the urgent need for additional office space for campus organizations, but stopped short of endorsing the SGA plan for the occupation of Bird building. Requests by other parties for the use of Bird building must also be considered before any final decision can be reached, he concluded.
