  • SPECIAL B Page 8/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/SEPTEMBER 8, 1977 'Tomorrow' Today N.C. Governor Jim Hunt is concerned with "North Carolina Tomorrow" today. In announcing an extensive survey of N.C. residents—the most ambitious survey ever attempted by any state- Hunt described the purpose of the survey, saying, "I think the people of this state want the chance to tell us what they think the problems are, and what their government should do about them. The more we know about what's on their minds, the better job government can do. And after all, it is their government." It is our government and it is not very often that citizens of any government have the opportunity to voice their opinions as clearly and directly as we of North Carolina, and particularly here at Western, now have. The results of this survey will be used to advise the governor on long- and short-term state goals, the 1979 legislative program, and the financial policies of the last two years of the governor's term. Many of these questions are divided into sub-categories, others are short answer-essay questions. Topics run from how satisfied you might be with the services of your area, to a wide range of possible taxes, to deciding the importance of various economic problems we face in North Carolina. Cecil Brooks, the associate director of Institutional Studies and Planning at WCU, was appointed to the State Goals and Policy Board by Governor Hunt and is responsible for distribution of the survey in our area. In an effort to make it easier for WCU students to participate in this survey, Brooks has arranged "drop-off" points throughout the campus. These are as follows: Townhouse TD's Newsstand The UC Information Desk SGA Offices Bird Information Desk The Library The office of Student Development, Scott Hall Other "drop-off" points may be arranged at a later date. It may take you a grand total of five whole minutes to fill out the survey- much easier than trying to lobby for Western's students' voting rights in Jackson County—and there is no real reason for not doing so, other than the possibility that you are slack, lazy, apathetic, uncaring, indifferent, listless, and, well need more be said? Of course nobody at Western suffers from these symptoms of cyanosis, leaving no room for excuses. Do yourself and your neighbors a favor by filling out this form and dropping it off at one of the various locations on campus. It might just be more important than voting.
