  • Page 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/SEPTEMBER 8, 1977 Soccer's a kick in the grass Schrader: 'more talent than ever' Western Carolina head soccer coach Charles Schrader knows he has more talent on his 1977 Catamount soccer team than he has ever had before...the question is, how much talent will the competition have? "We're very young," Dr. Schrader said, "but the group of freshmen and sophomores we have represent more talent than we've ever had on the field. We're much better than we have been in the past. But, to put that into perspective, so is everyone else. There are better soccer players available today." Schrader will play his toughest schedule ever, a 17-game slate, including Clemson (18-2-1 last season), South Carolina (19-2), Erskine (12-4-1) and Central Wesleyan(14-3-l). "I know the schedule will be tough," Schrader says, "I put it together. We will play some teams real quick that will make us play or else. 1 wanted to play them early, to prepare us for our Southern Conference schedule. We scheduled to improve, not to go unbeaten." Western opens up with Clemson and the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) on the road before its Sept. 15 home opener against Toccoa College. Then the Cats must go to VMI in the first of the Southern Conference clashes. "We have aspirations of being the Southern Conference champions," Schrader says bluntly. "Of course Appalachian State will be the favorite and we expect The Citadel and Davidson to be contenders.'' Schrader has just two seniors and three juniors among his 25-man roster. The remainder translates into eight sophomores and 12 freshmen. But, Schrader is far from pessimistic. "Not a single player from our offensive side from last year may be starting the way things look," Schradei explains. "Yet, I think we'll be much better offensively. We will be quicker and faster with two good scorers in John Corley (Charlotte) and Pete Craymer (Roanoke, Va.)." Among the others counted on for offensive punch will be Cecil Wills (Kingston, Jamaica), Benjy Comm (Chicago, 111.), Scott Grumman (Florence, S.C.), John Shireman (Bethlehem, Pa.), David Jones (Asheville) and Willy Stewart (Barranquilla, Columbia). Defensively, Western will again count on John Wetter (a senior from Concord) to key the action. Wetter is constantly assigned to the opposition's key offensive player. Simon Dickson (a sophomore from Kingston, Jamaica) has been shifted to fullback, his natural position, and Schrader says he could be the best in the conference. Elsewhere, the defense will rely on Jackie Adkins (Pineville), Jim Reinicker (Haddenfield, N.J.) and Mark Bridaers (Riegelwood). 1 he goalies will be Dave Burdette (Greenville, S.C.), who sat out last season after transferring, and Michae Sanders, an extremely talented freshman. Rupert Stout, Peter Rickards, and Freddie Phillips were also considered among the key players for a successful season. "We may get whipped and not score a goal in the early going," said Schrader. "However, we want to be ready when it comes to playing in the conference." A fine effort by goalie Dave Burdette Sunday was not enough as the Cats lost 6-0 to Clemson in an away match.
