  • Page 4/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/SEPTEMBER 8, 1977 Cross country Kaspryzk leads runners this season Cross country has to be one of the loneliest sports in the world. It takes hours of preparation before an athlett can complete a six mile course in just thirty minutes, ot Dennis Kaspryzk, a senior cross country runner from Lake Worth, Florida, has put quite a bit of mileage behind him this summer preparing for the 1977 cross country season. "I ran ten or more miles a day this past summer," Kasprysk said. Kaspryzk grew up in the suburbs of Buffalo, N'.Y. where he attended John F. Kennedy High. In his freshman and sophomore years in high school, Dennis played football and ran the ' 0 yard dash on the track team. In his junior year, some friends of Dennis pursued him to go out for the cross country team. "It wasn't really that tough," Kaspryzk said as he reflected back on his first cross country meet. "I finished second out of a field of eighty," he added. That same year in track, Kaspryzk ran an impressive time of 1:57.0 in the 880 yard run and lost only one time in that event all the regular season. Kaspryzk and his family moved to Florida in the summer after his junior season. He attended John I. Leonard High School and went undefeated during his senior cross country season, finishing eighth in the Florida State Cross Country Championships. "I trained hard for that season and I was really looking forward to it," Kaspryzk asid. In the winter of his senior year in high school, Kaspryzk ran a hundred miles a week preparing for that upcoming track season. All the training appeared to pay off as Dennis ran a 4:25 mile in his first attempt at that distance. Two meets later, disaster struck as Kaspryzk injured his right thigh and didn't run a step for four weeks. Determined to return to action, Kaspryzk began to train even harder to re-strengthen his leg and in the process Dennis changed to the two mile race to preserve his legs. Kaspryzk went on to finish second in the two mile at the Florida State Track and Field meet. Kaspryzk met with some problems in his first year at WCU. "I wasn't used to training in the rainy weather here in Cullowhee and I had a hard time at first," Kaspryzk said. "My freshman year was a learning year," Kaspryzk added. During that learning year, Kaspryzk was fifth in the state in cross country and also won the "Most Valuble" award for that sport. Kaspryzk's sophomore season was a prosperous one in track and field as he set records in the three mile, 500 meters, six mile, and the 10,000 meters. But unfortunately disaster struck again as he was preparing for the NCAA National when a calcium deposit set in on his ankle. At the beginning of his junior cross country, Kaspryzk was unable to shake his andkle injury and sat out most of the season but later returned to set the school cross country record in the six mile. After cross country season last year, Kaspryzk had a hot indoor track season. His most impressive performance came at the N.C. State Invitational indoor track meet where he set a new WCU two mile record, nine minutes flat. In route to this record, Dennis out-ran some of the best runners in the state. He closed his indooi Massie Furniture Co. 2 East Main St. SYLVA. N. Kaspryzk has an overall QPR of 3.3 and is a Middle Education major. "My present goals are to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships and make the All American team this fall, but what I really want is to win and help the team because cross country is a team sport. After colleee, I might start training for the Pan Am Games anc' possibly the 1980 Olympics. I also plan to return to school and study for my masters in education," Kasperzk said. The WCU cross country team will be on the road to Marshall Uni. this weekend to begin their '77 season. WCU's cross country team opens its season this week at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia and Coach Paul Jones will be depending on his top runner to carry Western through the early season. Jones believes senior Dennis Kasprzyk (Lake Worth, Fla.) will have to finish high in all the meets for the Cats to have any kind of success this season. The squad has only three returning runners and 10 freshmen. "I don't know how good the freshmen are yet, but they will have to run like veterans to have a good season. Last year's record was 5-3 and I hope to finish better this season," stated Coach Jones. Other veteran runners include junior John Costello (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore Jeff Cloninger (Lincolnton), both steady runners. Among the freshmen on this year's squad are five runners who appear capable of giving the squad effective performances this year. Mike Randall (East Point, Ga.) is a two-time state champ. Dennis Francis (Durham) was all-conference member at Southern Durham. Chris Houge (Cherryville) was all-county. Also running this season are freshmen Paul Boyette, (Charlotte) and Mark McDonald (Miami, Fla.). McDonald holds Southwest Miami's three-mile cross country record and was a member of the All-Miami cross country team for two years. Other freshmen on the team include Chris Blackmon (Charlotte), Benjy Comm (Chicago, 111.), Hal Cooper (Chapel Hill), Randall Jones (Morganton), and Robert Wagoner (Thomasville). According to Coach Jones, the two most difficult meets will be against Appalachian State and the Southern Conference Championships in Lexington, Virginia. "We will be trying to peak for these two meets," Jones said. 1977 CROSS COUNTRY SCHEDULE Sept. 10 - at Marshall University Sept. 17 - at Stone Mountain Run Sept. 24 - CARSON-NEWMAN COLLEGE and BREVARD COLLEGE Oct. 1 - APPALACHIAN STATE Oct. 8 - at Brevard/Carson-Newman Oct. 22 - North Carolina State Championships at Raleigh Nov. 5 - Southern Conference Championships at Lexington, VA [VMI host] Nov. 12 - NCAA Region 3 Qualifying at Greenville, SC ACADEMIC RESEARCH ALL SUBJECTS Fast, professional, and proven quality.
