  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY, MAY 26,1977 Cabaret good - except for Hoey by ANTHONY BROWN Contributing Editor last Friday night. I went to enjoy an evening in the "Cabaret." and if it had been held in any other spot on the globe but Hoey Auditorium. I would have had a fine evening. Unfortunately, the aseoustieal conditions of that building, while they mav have suited graduation ceremonies twenty years ago, do not satisfy the needs of musical productions of the present, even with electronic assistance. But we all know about the building; what about the plav and the actors and the set? lhe plav made a better movie than it does a plav. It moves by fits, stops, and starts. It never really does gel down to the point of what life was like in Berlin in 1932 because it is not crass enough, not dirty enough, anil not plainly mean enough lo do that. What was going on amongst the Germans, torn as they were between Communism and Nazism, is almost forgotten by today's ors as well as writers, because what was now fully known, and it is unspeakable, black actor sing that horrible (in its mean) song. "Tomorrow Belongs to Me." me to leave the theater! Not that he didn't he did it very well; the point is that to going on then i< confuse the black movement of the present and near past with the Aryan-Nazi-supremacy movement of the I930's is almost ludicrous to those of us who can remember even a little bit about those horrors. As lor the acting. I shall point out only the superlatives, because most of the characters in this rather weak vehicle were played strongly, and it is not necessary to make fine distinctions. However, 1 cannot help but observe that the pails of Fraulein Schneider and Hen Schultz were outstanding. They were performed with a maturity and a stage presence thai were clearly above all others, and they richlv deserved the Special hursts of applause they received from an otherwise rather so-so audience. The whores (I never did get their names straight, which is probahlv just as well') performed convincingly (no innuendo there), but the tall, funny one (Fraulein Kost, was it?) was superb. II we had a "House" in Cullowhee (do we'.'). I'd want her to run it! lhe master of ceremonies was line, but not nearly naughty enough. Sally Bowles was absolutely beautiful in both presence and costume, vet needed a bit more "world-weariness" in her lines and songs. Everyone else, as 1 have said, performed adequately, given the oddities of the book. The set was grand. No critic could help but notice the VA loans show increase Education loans for veterans have nearly doubled in a year, the Veterans Administration reported today. VA approved 1. 51b education loans during March, the largest monthly total sice the program was started two years ago. More than lb.500 loans totaling $10 million had been granted through 1976. VA Regional Director H. W. Johnson explained the agency makes educational loans up to a maximum of $1500 per academic year beyond regular VA allowances, to needy veterans and "dependents. Applications come from veteran students enrolled under the Gl Bill and from dependents using the dependents educational program. Johnson said applicants must be enrolled on a half-time basis or more in courses leading to a standard college degree, or in a program of at leasl six months duration which leads to professional or vocational objective. No loans are made lor correspondence, flight, high school or on-the-job training. Applicants first must apply for a guaranteed student loan administered by HEW. If they are turned down lor the HEW loan, or fail to get the full amount, they can be considered by VA, Johnson Repayment of the loan is deferred until nine months after lhe student ceases enrollment with full payment due within ten years and nine months. No interest is charged until the beginning of the repayment period. At that time interest starts on the unpaid balance at the rate of 7 per cent per annum. There is no prepayment Complete loan information is available from veterans representatives on campus or local VA offices. Finally, I must say that the lighting (Hoey again!) and some of the liming between the scenes (as well as sights ol the actors serving as prop hands!) were not admirably handled. 1 know., a show of this sort must move quickly or die; but this one ran in places where it should have strolled and limped in spots where it should have trotted. But. on balance, it was an enjoyable evening in a place where life is "beautiful," while life on the outside is often anything hut beautiful. 1 came to enjoy; I did enjoy; and I would come again! But please—do change the address so that such a marvelous orchestra can he heard under reasonable conditions. They would have sounded good m Poll) Adler's, but not in Hoey.
