That crazy lady, Opal Kron- kis, who collects junk and anything that can be toted home in her little red wagon, is still keeping audiences laughing at Highlands Playhouse in "Everybody Loves Opal", Playwright John Patrick has given the character of Opal a cheerful philosophy which is an abiding faith in the goodness of human nature, even when three crooks on the lam from the police move in on her, endanger her life, and then proceed to try and do her in. They drug her, drop a ceiling beam on her head, set the house on fire and run over her with a car, and yet Opal still radiates kindness. The situations are goofy and hilarious, and combined with Patrick's witty script, the comedy is funny family entertainment. Marye Brent, a well- known characted actress from New York plays Opal. She has portrayed the same role in theaters all over the country, and has become so identified with the role that she is often addressed as "Opal" instead of her own given name. Mrs. Brent is supported by a cast of professional actors under the direction of Michael Hall. The set, which calls for a tumbled down shack on the edge of the city dump, has had designer Frank Bennett combing dumps all over the countryside gathering junk to clutter up the "junky" set. "Everybody Loves Opal" has evening performances at 8:30 Wednesdays through Saturdays until July 20th, and one more matinee at 2:30, July 14th. For reservations call Highlands Playhouse,704/526-2695. A $5,800 grant has been made to the Western Carolina University law enforcement program by the U. S. Department of Justice Law Enforcement Assistance Administration. The grant, made under the administration's law enforcement awards program, will provide scholarships or loans to students enrolled in the law enforcement program at WCU. The program, which leads to a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a concentration in law enforcement, is conducted by the Department of Business Law in the School of Business.
