  • [THE DOCTOR'S BAG\ | if Arnold Umu. %. 1. \ QUESTION: Several months ago my boyfriend and I spent the weekend together after a long time of not being with each other. We made love several times. After he left, 1 was plagued by an itching and burning sensation and a white vaginal discharge, My doctor diagnosed it as a yeast infection and it took two weeks of using suppositories and creams to get rid of it. Recently, my boyfriend and 1 spent another weekend together and now I have the same thing again, Is this disease related to lovemaking? What can I do to prevent it? The discomfort I am experiencing is beyond belief, ANSWER: Vaginal yeast infections are fairly common and the organism that causes them is easily identified,, yet most explanations as to why some women get them and other women do not leave much to be desired. Yeasts are present in a great many vaginas and produce no difficulties, Circumstances which alter the environment of the vagina can tip the balance in favor of an overgrowth of the yeast, The use of antibiotics is one such event. Occasionally women on the birth control pills have trouble with yeast infections although it is unclear if such women experience a higher incidence of infections than women off the pill. Treatment of the infection often takes a couple of weeks as you ind.cated, but what is often forgotten is that infections can reappear spontaneously every few months. Therefore, it may merely be a coincidence that your boyfriend and the discharge appeared in such close proximity to each other, While certain types of vaginal discharges are caused by an organism present in the man which is passed back and forth between him and his partner, yeast infections are not typically one of these, A gynecologist colleague has noted that after treating such infections several times in the same woman, he can still find small amounts of yeast present bat no inflammation, discharge or itching, He believes that some women nvght be overly sensitive to the organism and eventually lose their sensitivity, The best prevention would appear to be having each Infection treated rapidly, Douches once or twice a week are found helpful as a preventive by some women but should be prescribed by a physician, QUESTION: Is it possible to become pregnant while taking a warm bubble bath with a guy? A friend insists it is because of the warmth of the water, but wouldn't the soap do in the sperm before that point? Please reply, a tantalizing bath lies in the balance! ANSWER; Having intercourse in the bathtub is dangerous. You can bang your head and hurt yourself; worse yet, you can drown. Aside from these hazards, pregnancy could result from intercourse under these circumstances, If you are suggesting the pregnancy would occur without intercourse by sperm swim-ning through the soapy water, that is qti:te impossible, QUESTION: This sounds kind of bizarre, but every time I am with my girl friend, 1 start burping a lotl I know that burping occurs with the intake of air during eating or drinking, but what about when I'm not doing these things? Is it me, or my girl friend, or what? ANSWER: It sounds as if you're swallowing a lot of air when you are with your girl friend, Air swallowing can occur with anxiety or with excitement. Try to observe yourself carefully the next time this happens since once a person becomes aware of the habit it is usually not difficult to stop it, Also, if you chew gum when you are with your girlfriend, you might be inducing air swallowing as well. A review THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY MAY 1. 1971 PAGE 5 l||||lHllll||jn!IHilIII!!lt||lll^ by K.H. Boutelle RIPPLE I'nder the auspices of Michael Thevis and the General Recording Company, Ripple has made its debut with "Ripple", a combination soul-funk LI', complete with horn section, a variety of percussion and an abundance of harmonies, all of which exemplify the commercialism of standard club acts, Distinguished primarily by their muscial experience, the members of Ripple are polished professionals, Their anticlimactic success suffers not from a lack of energy or stale sound ,but rather from a lack of diversity, a problem which more and more rock-pop-soul groups are submitting to, Ripple certainly has the instrumentation necessary for new horizons but fails to utilize them on this album, which results in somnolent repetition. The band's saving grace comes directly from their strong vocal work, an ability to drop down and underplay leads and their precise sense of timing and rhythm. Ripple is tight (this fact should not be mistaken), but unfortunately stuck. RICK CUNHA-"Cunha Songs" Balladeer Rick Cunha, who is also under the wing of GRC ( turning dreams into realities), has emerged on the recording scene with "Cunha liongs", an all-original set of folk-like material flavored with a country-rock and easy listening sound, Cunha picks a fine guitar and is assisted on this album by many, including country contributors Waylon Jennings, the Scruggs brothers and the Nashville Edition, The lyrics are interesting and in many instances reflect the character of an individual who perceives the eroding effect of persecution and at the same time is capable of nonsensical joy. The music is alive and fresh but Cunha's nasal-tone voice occasionally obscures its quality, Aside from this weakness, Rick Cunha still possesses a good deal of potential and is currently on the charts with a single entitled "(I'm A) Yo-Yo Man". With his soothing melodies and heartbreak narratives, Rick Cunha and his primo back-up band are troubadours to watch for. This family is dead wrong. America has become a land of forgotten dreams, is inhabited by scores of misfits with negative outlooks. Their nattering nihlism can be halted by concerned citizens like yourself. Band together now before the can- cer of wrong defeats the body of right. (Paid for by the Society for the Prevention of Discontentment Among the Upper Orders- Local 386). photo by Bill Mclntyre. Ingmar Bergman's 'The Seventh Seal' When the Seventh Sea! :s to. iede the world meits and the universe totters. In the four" teenth century there is a Trojan sadness. Three contending popes distract the people, A knight and his squire, Jons, have returned from a meaningless crusade ordered by one of the popes of the moon. The knight is not a young nor romantic -might. He is old, tired, defeated,1 His squire is tired, plump, ordinary. The action takes place during the half hour of silence that occurs after the Lamb opens the seventh seal. The people of the fourte Mih century were obsessed with the spectral and fantastic shape of death, Tombs wp adorned with hideous images of the corpse, clenched hands, rigid feet, gaping mouth, bowels crawling with worms. Death is the indefatigable dancer, One dances with a corpse, The living man's partner is his future shape, the couple a frightful double, "It is yourself," The Black Death ravages the province in which the knight and Jons find themselves. The knight knows the meaningless of the world. The feeling of power- lessness paralyzes him. There is a widespi-eid feeling of impending calamity , No one since the beginning of the great Western schism has entered Paradise, Chronic unresi uad uneasiness. On a desol ve shore the knight engages in a game of chess with Death. The pize for the knight is to be his life. While the game is in progress, the knight manage-, i . -form yae meaningful act. He saves a couple of traveling jugglers, Jof and Mhj from death. The knight arrives home and finds his wife. She, Karin, reads a selection Com the Book of Rev elation. Then enters Death, All present join in his dance while the jugglers look on. The jugglers watch while the daw n'i i'ollow Dtf.thalongahill and so on and so on, One marvellous scene, In a clearing in the woods a pyre has been built to burn Ihe witch Tyan. The knight questions her. The Devil is with her-; perhaps he knows something about God, Her eyes are empty, nothing there, no answer. He consoles her; she cannot console him, She goes calmly to her hideous death, the Devil will protect her from all eviL Another scene. The actor Skat elopes wit'i he smith Plog's wife. In the forest during the night Skat climbs up a tree, Death saws it off. On the siump appears a squirrel. Life goes on and so on and so on, Jons the squire is \ mater ialist and a skepl'c, He mows that the big questions have no net ling. Still, he helps other people. The knight continues to question others, The knight demnnds an answer,knowledge.. not faith, Jons comments on the Crusade in this fashion: "I'll tell you, our crusade was so stupid that only a real idealist could have invented it," And the knight asks his meaningless questions. Yet another scene, The knight is with Mie, shortly to be joined by Jons who has rescued Jof from ill treatment it the tavern, Mia offers wild strawberries from a big bowl and milk for the berries, The knight learns the jugglers are on their way to Helsinor. He suggests they accompany him through the forest and warns them about the plague, During the night when the chess game is to be fin ished the knight sweeps the chessmen from the board, He succeeds in detaining Death so long that the jugglers escape safely. Mia says: "One day Is :ke another. There's nothing strings about that, Sumnne,- is better than winter, of course, for then we don't have to freeze, But spring is best of all." The knight says: 'Faith is a heavy suffering, do you know- that? It is like loving somebody who is out there in the darkness and who never reveals himself, however loudly we call." Mia replies: "1 don't understand what you mean." When Death comes for all the others a girl whom Jons has saved from Raval, a thief and a grave- robber, bids him to be silent. And he answers, "I shall be quiet; but under protest,"
