  • Friday, October 22, 1965 The Western Carolinian Page 7 Zimmerman, Adams Named Most Outstanding Players By Lamar Buchanan Bill "Zippy" Zimmerman was selected as back of the week against Mars Hill. "Zippy" scored two touchdowns and turned in many fine runs in receiving this award. He is a freshman from Wilmerding, Pa., where he was an All-Conference, All-Western Pennsylvania and All-District halfback. Zimmerman has shown much ability and promise here at Western Carolina. He is 5' 6" tall and weighs 160 pounds. Bill has not yet decided on a major. Jerry Adams, 220-pound, 23- year-old senior, was selected as lineman of the week. Adams is a returning letterman from Kings Mountain, N. C, and he has played an important part in this season's victories. Rated as an outstanding blocker, Jerry will deserve his award. These two players were honored by the team as being outstanding against Mars Hill. We should like to honor the entire team for the performances they have given this year. Sporting a fired up offense, the Cats scored 20 points in the first period and then coasted from there. No sooner had the 4,000 fans settled themselves in their seats when Bill Stanley recovered a Mars Hill fumble on the 8-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, halfback Bill Zimmerman raced off his own right tackle for the score. Doug King's conversion attempt made the score 7-0. Before the cheering had cased, end Joe Love recovered another Mars Hill fumble, this time on their own 33. Two plays later, Zimmerman again made the trip to pay- dirt with a 27-yard scamper. King upped the notch to 14- 0. The Lions tried to move the ball against the tough Catamount defense, but they were forced to punt from their 38. John McLeod boomed a beautiful punt to "Jet" Johnson on the Cats' 7-yard line. He fumbled it, recovered the bouncing oval two yards deep in the end zone, and then streaked 102 yards for another touchdown. King's kick was blocked but the Cats led, 20-0. Not stopping yet, the Cats struck again in the second period when quarterback Danny Hill hit end Roger Cox on a 56-yard scoring pass. King's attempt for the point after was again blocked, and the score stood 26-0. After a rest period at half- time, the Cats begain mounting the score even more in the third quarter. Johnson's 27- yard jaunt and Leroy Holden's 35-yard touchdown pass from Hill, plus two more Doug King conversions, wrote the final score. Outstanding players for the Cats were many. On defense, Ken Lewis and Joe Love played their usual brilliant game, while Don Powers, John Ruta, Bill Stanley and Ronnie Scott turned in fine performances.
