Book Review By T. C. Roberts Friday, May 8, 1964 'Fanny Hill1 Is Not Mere Pornography MEMOIRS OF A WOMAN OF PLEASURE, John Cleland. New York, G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1963. 319pp. $6.00. It is not surprising that the open publication in the United States of John Cleland's notorious MEMOIRS OF A WOMAN OF PLEASURE — or FANNY HILL, as it is more commonly known — has resulted in a battle to suppress the book. Published in 1749, FANNY HILL has continuously subjected to the serious criticism that it contains no real literary worth, merely pure pornography. However, some critics have supported FANNY HILL on the basis of the novel's structure, themes, and its rhetoric. My suggestion is that the individual read the book himself and then draw his own conclusion. FANNY HILL consists of two letters in which Fanny Hill tells of her life as a kept woman and prostitute. The first letter begins with the innocent Fanny falling into the hands of a madam. Then, just as the madam Is about to market her maidenhead, she falls in love, runs off, and is willingly seduced. After several blissful months, however, her lover, Charles, is forced by his cruel father to leave England; and Fanny, at the Page 9 I SUMtfteinl I Gort thinks flumph! he's clever just because he invented the wheel! At first she refuses him, but after he has raped her, she accepts him as a keeper. Upon discovering his infidelity with her maid, a few months later, she seduces his naive, young serving-man, Will, and pays him for her pleasure. She in turn is discovered by Mr. H., who sends her away. At this point the letter ends. At the beginning of the second letter, Fanny goes to work at Mrs. Cole's house of prostitution, where Emily, Harriet, and Louisa, the three other members of the "sisterhood," treat her to tales of their loss of maidenhead. When Mrs. Cole closes her establishment, Fanny moves to the suburbs, where she meets a wealthy, elderly gentleman, who soon dies and leaves her his fortune. She travels into the country and is reunited with Charles; they return to the city and marry. The book ends. Perhaps the real purpose of the structure of FANNY HILL is what it is in any novel: to develop and reinforce theme. This novel has three important recurring themes. Cleland argues for the value of experience, the value of reason and self-control, and the value of love. I feel that the rhetoric, theme, and structure of FANNY HILL give it some genuine literary merit. Any book that can be read In as many ways as this one can Is not just pornography. Stripes are stronger and more colorful — some in 2-color combinations. Even oxford gets into the act — the white threads are woven with reds and bright yellows, as well as tans and blues. Button-down styling remains a standard, but here's a trend to watch: the button-down collar itself is getting a little longer. The 3V4" measurement gives you more flare in front— if, and as you like it. THE BOLDER LOOK in ties continues to grow, too. Small- figured foulard and challis ties and the regulation regimental stripe find the future brightening by the day! And just in case we haven't mentioned it lately, the square white edge of handkerchief in the chest pocket is as square as it looks! Check into patterned silk squares instead — related to the colors of your tie. Worn puffed out and bottom-side-up, they make a strong point of additional color. FASHION UNDERFOOT concentrates on cordovan, especially in plain-toe slip-ons. Wing-tip styles continue to be popular, both in cordovan and black. And take a look at the new man- made materials for shoes. These practical poromerics have extra lightness and ease-of-care — in most cases they look freshly polished with the flick of a handkerchief.
