Item
?

Item’s are ‘child’ level descriptions to ‘parent’ objects, (e.g. one page of a whole book).

  • March 1, 1934 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page Three tCHIPSf By Paul Lyday Wilson Lyday had a date Saturday night; it wasn't a co-ed. We wondier if she's in his practice teaching science class? Some noted authorities say nothing is impossible, but we'd like to see the guy who can find a hole in water after sticking his finger in it. Simp, when are you leaving for Havana? They make cigarettes to order down there, by the way. Booster, boaster, royster, boyster, or girlster—it's all the same; why call it a club? Psychologists call it instinct 'er sumthin.' By their works ye shall know them —"Peacorn, popnuts, chewing gum apples and good candy." Check names applying to same: Freeman () Duckett () Strickland () Brown () Bristol () Red Raper has flunked on his campus course. Was it B. O., Halitosis, or a Ford V-8? Anyway, we bet he'd go to Asheville if . . . . ? CATAMOUNT LASSIES LOSE HARD FOUGHT BATTLE The Western Carolina Girls lost a hard fought game to the lassies of Milligan College, Tennessee, with the score of 24 to 30. Catamount Girls lose game to Appalachian State Teachers' College to the tune of 26 to 34. EPWORTH LEAGUE AND B. Y. P. U. HAVE JOINT MEET Miss Celestia Fuller spoke before a large gathering of college students on Sunday, February 4th. She related in a most interesting manner concerning the customs which are prevalent in China today. Miss Fuller has been an efficient nurse in a Shanghai hospital for the past four years. Of great interest was the collection of various articles which she displayed and discussed for her listeners. The League hopes to present Miss Fuller as speaker again in the spring. SEEN IN FRONT OF JOYNER BUILDING AFTER CHAPEL— No speaker for chapel; it seems to have been O. K. with everyone. Wilkie is standing on the rock wall playing with his keys. Squirt Retting is nearby. Wonder if they're discussing a swimming party? Lib West comes from the book- room. Lib has a new boy friend, and his name?— Oh, some Guy! At least she curls her hair every week and she has a new watch. Windy and Mary Alice come fi around the steps; they seem to be quarreling; "But Don't Blame Me." Ruth Burch and Jackson go strolling down the hill. Now this it difficult to explain. Here comes Kink Roberts with a notebook. We wonder if he uses that notebook to write down facts or just notes to a certain teacher. By the way, we hear that Tilson and Kink are on good terms again, following the race for that certain teacher. Here comes Frank and Reba. And say, we hear that she's put a certain young Army Officer's picture in her trunk. We guess, of course, that she has another to take its place. And here comes Mildred Kooiman and Kemp Tunis. If I were guessing I would say they were sympathizing with one another. You know that Morgan fellow was on the campus recently, and also Kemp's girl-friend. Why, Kemp has been excited for weeks! The girls are still talking about the "good points" of the Lenoi: Rhyne boys. —Ballance. STUDENT OPINION ON CURRENT PROBLEMS Question: Should the college colors be changed ? Tom Woodard (President of the Sophomore Class) : "The college colors should not be changed. They should remain the permanent symbol of the college and not be modified." Wilson Lyday (President of the Columbian Literary Society) : "The college colors should be changed because the colors we now have do not excite a response which is in harmony with our athletic program." Ruth Burch (Student Senator): "The college colors should be changed because purple and gold are not substantial colors. These colors fade easily and are then dull and unattractive. It would be an economy measure in the purchasing of suits to have more lasing colors. Mildred Kooiman (Student Senator) : "Purple and gold are very dignified colors, and I cannot conceive of a better combination of colors for the purpose. Our alumni have loved these colors and have been devoted to them, so let us not change such a significant symbol." Alvin Sutton: Why does a redheaded woman always marry a quiet fellow? Tommy Woodard: He just naturally gets that way. Freshman Duckett: Mrs. Gulley, is a doctor of music a guy who repairs violins? Come on, John, you've got to make up your mind between Lena and Frances. You know you can't two- time these girls and get away with Yes, Mr. Calfee, we know you like big blonds. Your eyes betray. Latest out is that Lib West has quit loafing and doesn't know it—so Mr. Poindexter says. Now, who does the radio down in the book store belong to? Simp paid for it and "Jane" got it! Mr. Allen: I will not begin today's lesson until the room settles down. Tink Williams: Go home and sleep it off. Wilkie says they don't even steal bases at Weaver because it's such a Christian college! How did you like the PIG from A. C? Wonder why Alberta Ivey attends chapel so regularly and goes to all inter-mural games? Scrub Bryson is the answer. Mary Alice Potter and Carolyn Weaver were seen at the game with Lenoir-Rhyne. They got up and sat with the Lenoir-Rhyne boys. When the game started they moved. Watch out, Windy! Old but true—when the cat is away the mice will play. Come on, Blackberries, tell us about it. We know you have a "secret sorrow" and we also know it's tall. While the boys were away on a recent basketball trip, I wonder why so many of the girls attended the show in Sylva? The student body extends congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Elliot upon the birth of Philip Loven Elliot, Jr. Here's to Jim Crawford, who so graciously loans his typewriter to the Western Carolinian and Catamount staffs. Mr. Stillwell: In which of his battles did Alexander lose his life? Tilson: I think it was his last. John Denton frequently winks at Bertha Nail. Reeves (driving) : I have 1 clutch. Rat: So I've noticed. weak Ruth Ballance: I'll never marry man who isn't exactly my opposite. Lena Caldwell: Well, there are plenty of intelligent men around here. Mary Cox likes "Kinks" so much that she almost got a permanent. Mr. Seymour: Puddin' and pie, flunked the girls and made them cry. When he heard what the ladies said, Mr. Seymour murmured, "Is my face red?" SPECIAL WELCOME TO STUDENTS! Regular Meals - Cakes - Pies Sandwiches Candies HOLE-IN-WALL SYLVA, N. C.
