  • This front-page article in the January 23, 1986 issue of the Western Carolinian titled "Addressing gay concerns: Lavender Bridges recognized" reports on the fact that Lavender Bridges was recognized officially by the Office of Student Development on December 13, 1985. Lavender Bridges, an anonymously founded student organization open to all individuals, aimed to promote awareness of lesbian and gay lifestyle, provide lesbian and gay resources, and increase communication with all students and community members. The first organizational meeting took place October 10, 1985 and was officially recognized by the office of Student Development on December 13, 1985. The last mention of the group appeared in the October 10, 1991 issue of the Western Carolinian.
  • Addressing Gay Concerns: Lavender Bridges Recognized Lavender Bridges, the student lesbian and gay organization at WCU, was officially recognized through the office of Student Development on December 13, 1985. This organization was the focus of much controversy during fall semester, 1985. It is the first lesbian and gay organzation toapplyforand gain recognition asa WCU campus organization. Any campus organization recognized through the office of Student Development is entitled to the following privleges: use of campus facilities for meetings and programs and the posting of announcements on campus. The organization's leader says,"While Lavender Bridges specifically addresses the concerns of sexual orientation, the group wishes to extend an invitation to any individual who is interested in learning more about the issues surrounding a lesbian or gay lifestyle. Those who are not lesbian or gay may attend to gain a better understanding of what it is like to be lesbian or gay in a homophobic environment. They may have a loved one or friend who is lesbian orgay orthey maysimply wish to show support for individuals who deserve the same human rights as any individual." There are many goals which the group has established which would serve not only the gay community at WCU, but also the concerns of the general campus community. Lavender Bridges will provide an environment for lesbian and gay unity and growth. Individuals interested in attending a meeting may do so without being required to be members or to give their names. Lavender Bridges has information available for those who have questions about being lesbian or gay and for those who are concerned for loved ones and friends.
