This is your special day, and we want you to enjoy it to the fullest. You have worked long and hard for the education which you have achieved, and you have every reason to rejoice with the completion of the requirements for your degree. Many of you have attended the university on a part-time basis and some over a number of years while fulfilling other professional and family responsibilities. All of this combined with your college education has been ditiicult, but it has all been worthwhile. It takes a great deal of dedication, com- mitment, and hard work to achieve an education under the kind of conditions many of you have had to face, and to you we extend a very special recognition on this occasion. At this time we want to say a word of encouragement because it seems that there is so much to discourage one as you prepare to leave the university and move into full time employment. There is no question that you leave us at a time when the world seems to be beset with heavy problems, and you are given an excessive burden of pessimistic and negative attitudes from the society of which you will be a part. This is certainly true of education where serious questions have been raised as to the effectiveness of our educational processes, and some even question the high value of an education in which we have come to believe. We do not accept these attitudes and concerns; rather, we believe that you have achieved a great milestone with your education and that you are prepared to meet and solve the problems in the world which you will be facing. We have great belief in your ability, and we are optimistic about the future based largely upon our knowledge of you, the young people, and your ability to meet and conquer the difficulties while you make this world a better place in which to live. Our hopes and prayers go with you. Remember your university and return often to visit with us. Continue to help us make Western Carolina University an institution of which you are and will always be proud, and let us benefit from your counsel and guidance in the years ahead.
