Philada April 21, 1883 Hon Robt. E. Lincoln. Secy. Of War D. Sir About two years ago I found in a Rag Shop two certificates of George W. Whitman. One of them brevetting him Lieutenant Colonel for meritorious services during the War. Signed Andrew Johnson and Edwin M Stanton and dated 13th Day of March 1865. Recorded Volume 4 page 119 Adjutant Generals office May 22nd 1866 Ed Townsend Asst. Adjt. General. The other to George W. Whitman appointing said George W. Whitman Major of the 51st Regiment of Infantry New York State Volunteers dated April 29, 1865

In this letter from April 21, 1883, W. Irving Landell writes to Robert Lincoln, Secretary of War. Landell found two certificates of George Whitman’s in a Rag Shop and would like to return them so he is requesting George’s current address. The accompanying document is a formal request from April 30, 1883 to the Adjutant General.
