GUN USED BY BOONE Flintlock Carried Brought Into Store for Repai by Pioneer Hardware boar's tusk, and has the double or set trigger. On the side of the stock are carved with a jackknife the words, "Boone's True Fren," on the walnut stack the initials "D. B." and five most significant and sinister notches, each notch standing' for "one good Injun." At | MADISON, Wis., Tuesday, Feb. 1 S.Daniel Boone's gun, the genuine old- j fashioned flintlock, carried by Boone on many a perilous trip in the "dark and bloody" hunting grounds of Kentucky and on "his famous Indian hunt- j ing expeditions, was recently brought j into a hardware store in a small town j in Southwestern Wisconsin for much | needed repairs. It is now the property of Mr. Rafter, j Platteville, Wis., formerly of Missis- i sippi, who recently traded his 2,300- acre plantation, for Wisconsin property and has moved his effects North. I The gun was given him by a doctor, <- to whom it had been given by an aged hermit living in the mountains of Tennessee. The gun is a formidable affair; a real "long gun." It has a barrel 46 inches long, is 62 inches over, all, a .45-calibre, a flintlock with a patehbox of inlaid silver, and weighs ten pounds. The end of the butt is set with a wild the lower end of the stock is a long and deeply cut gash said to have been cut by an Indian tomahawk thrown at Boone. In a letter to Horace Kephart on February 19, 1919, W. B. Knoble sends Kephart a “Seattle Times” newspaper clipping that he thinks disproves that Daniel Boone’s rifles have been located and accounted for. The article explains that Mr. Rafter of Wisconsin owns Boone’s flintlock rifle and brought the gun to a hardware store for repairs.
