  • crossing of the rivers athward its course but the Northern Unaka section furnishes an interesting variety in following the west bank of New River for six miles north from Dixon’s Ferry. Cliffs come down almost sheer to the water’s edge; it is a miniature Grand Canyon. At the tremendous Byllesby Dam the route leads west steeply over Farmer Mountain (3,040 ft.) with a splendid outlook. Beyond there is a break in the range and some five miles fo road, which can well be covered by car, lead to the beginning of the Forest Service Yellow and Bourne Branch trails, near the home of Forest Guard C. S. Jackson, who marked this section of the Trail. The Trail ascends through a most pleasing forest growth to the cleared top of Jones Knob (3,832 ft.) with its far-flung panoramic view.
