Tryon Toy Makers and Wood Carvers:A Craft School
Item
Item’s are ‘child’ level descriptions to ‘parent’ objects, (e.g. one page of a whole book).
-
This leaflet provides a brief overview of work done by Eleanor Vance and Charlotte Yale with the Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers. The women began their craft teaching in Asheville, North Carolina with the Biltmore Estate Industries in 1901, and their move to Tryon, N.C. in 1915 where they established the Tryon Toy Makers and Wood Carvers. Here they instructed young people in woodworking and used the sales of toys and other decorative pieces to support the business for over twenty years. The business was transferred to new owners in 1935 when Yale and Vance began a new enterprise with the Tryon Craft School. A fire in 1939 destroyed the Tryon Toy Makers and the name was returned to Yale and Vance.
