These two topographic maps show the eastern half and western half of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including parts of North Carolina and Tennessee. Both are reflective of a survey conducted from 1927 to 1931. Relief shown by contours, shading, and spot heights. The eastern half includes park lands from the eastern boundary west to Clingmans Dome. The western half includes park lands from the western boundary east to Fortney Ridge. By 1930, North Carolina had deeded more than 50,000 acres of land to the Department of the Interior, taking the first tangible steps toward creating the park; Tennessee soon followed suit.
