been is getting low in spirits about our success or our coming up victors. Yet, we intend to fight and I have no dout but what there will be heavy fighting in this section before long. I can inform you that there is a great many people in this section that is in favor of appealing to England for help, and Sis, this is a principal that cannot receive any countenance from me as long as there is a spoonful of warm blood in my body. The news is here that there is going to be a draft in Rutherford in ten days. If you are drafted right to me soon about it and give me your Captain s name and I will get a transfer and come to your company. Don’t never volunteer—tell the rest not to, but stay at home and make all you can. Yet don't tell nobody that I discourage you from volunteering. Don't tell it certain, for if I was at home it is likely I would come again. But you have no right to come, yet. I want you to burn around your plantation and prepare it for fire time. Don't fail in doing this. The wind blowed the hardest here yesterday I ever saw. It made the waves roll in the river. There has been several days lately that looked very much like spring of the year. It made me think of planting corn very much. I have much more that I could right but I must close for this time. You can direct your letter to Martin County, Hamilton, NC. 34 Reg. NC Vol. in care of Capt. Simmons. Please tell Wm. Jones folks where to direct their letters to him and Tolliver. Right to me soon.

In this lengthy letter of February 25, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes to his friends and relatives from his location in Weldon, NC where he details the events of the past two weeks. The Yankies are defeating them and the draft is coming to Rutherford in the next ten days. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
