  • But on the 20th of this month we got the news that the Yankies were going up the Chowan River and intended to land some where on the river and march by land to the railroad that runs from this place (Weldon) to Virginia and the supposition was that they would try to get possession of the bridge that is over the Roanoke River. The bridge is about one half mile from this place. It is about 500 yds long and if the Yankies could get the bridge it would cut off all communication with our forces in Virginia, this being the main line of railroads by which communication is kept up with Old Virginia. Then their intention was to attack Norfork, Richmond and Manases in the rear and the enemy on the other hand in front, and by these means reduce these three places to submission. As soon as we received this news we was ordered to take up the line of march for Weldon, right here at the Bridge. We marched three days and last Saturday night we got to the town of Tarboro in Edgecomb County, that being
