for a furlough home to make up a company and the Col. would let him and now he has given James Miller leave to go. I want you to do everything you can against him in making up a company and try to get Ben Washburn to do all he can against him for he is nothing but a fake and a drunkard. He has been drunk here near half his time or a good portion of his time, at any rate. If the people only knew the difference of being under good officers and bad ones. James Miller never could get any position as an officer. We have suffered much by not having good officers, though don't say that I said so. If I ever get home then I will be at liberty to talk. I will say again, I want you to do all you can against Miller and his click for there will be more with him. Try to get old Ben to use his influence against him. He can do more than anybody else. If there is any more companies raised in Rutherford the privates would do well to put men in office that has some principle and feeling. I don't want you to volunteer, but stay at home and take care of the rest as long as you can for it is uncertain how this war is going to terminate. There will be nothing made in this section this coming year. Most of the richest and best farms in this section is deserted by the owners. There is lots of cotton here just lying about, doing no body no good. Some of the people is hauling their cotton into

In this letter of March 6, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes to his father (William Lawrence Huntley, 1821-1899) saying that his Regiment reached Hamilton, NC on the 1st of March and how long they stay depends on the movements of the Yankies. He urges his father to not sign up for the war, but to “make corn and wheat instead.” The fields around Huntley have been abandoned and cotton is laying about. He is considering going “in for the War” so he can get 50 dollars to spend on books. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
