Tom Edmonston to brothers B.B. and B.F. Page 1 Pigeon Valley July 24th 1864 Dear Brothers I received your letter of 7th but I was not at Pigeon. We had moved to Asheville. I was truly glad to hear from and that you was still alive. I hope you health is still improving buy [by] this time, I am at home on ten (10) D furlough. I will have to go to my co [company] this day week. I wish that you was here to spend the week with me. I think I will have gay time. there will be a big examination at Waynesville the last of this week. I will go there certain if nothing happens. All the girls is going on the river and I can’t help but have a fine time. I will write you when it comes off and give you all the news and what for time I have Ben you said you wanted me to do all I could for Bryson and Freeman I will go for Bryson but Freeman will not get any votes of conseque nce and there four I think our shore plan [?] is to kill [?] Dr. Estus is to throw our strength for Love for he is the strongest man of the two and then I will tell you that Es will beat them both and I think it rather doubtful about Bryson’s success but I hop he will gain the victory and Holden will run Vance the tightest race you ever saw I am a Vance Man you said that Capt C told you that We was all going for Wilson [?] he told More than I knowed for I would vote For Holdon as soon and I would vote for old Abe as soon as Holdon I think that if North Carolina H E Henry that the thing is good Page 3 July the 25 / 64 There is nothing of interest in the country the wheat crops was tolerable good corn ___ looks fine but is late Father is nearly done his corn manual [Manuel?] is hear yet and is one of the best boys to work out him and Straffin has made a fine crop this summer I have been cutting some oats today but it is so hot I cant stand it I will go over the mountain this evening I have give out the idea of coming to your Regt for awhile I think I can get a nice position in the Regt if it is exchanged I think that we will make a move in to Tenn. soon and there we will have a gay time from the movements that is on foot I think we will go soon and if we do soon one will be hard but __ I cant tell ho I had a fine time I (4) Saturday at Hartgroves with Sallie C and man C you ever saw eating June apples the girls is all as lively as tadpoles Ben I think that this cruel war will end this fall and I hope that we will all live to see the end of it let it be long or short but it don’t look like that some of us can live taken you are exposed every day as you are but I hope you both will come through safe. In this letter of July 24, 1864 Tom Edmonston writes to his brothers B.F. and B.B. Edmonston, giving his frank views on candidates for the upcoming North Carolina gubernatorial election. He also gives updates on local events and expresses hope that all will survive the war.
