  • Ill^^^^s 4,P LUME 3 N O R T H C A R 0 L I N A , JANUARY, NUMBER8 A Splendid Record Flag-Raising exercises were held at the System office at noon hour Friday January 5th, when members of the R. & A. department were, formally presented with a flag by the Safety committee in recognition of the record made by their department in avoiding accidents during the months of November and December. Master Mechanic William Battison made a few well chosen remarks to his men thanking them for the record and entreating them to keep the record clean and the flag waving over the System office. Attention was called to the following letter from the Safety committee: L. H. Clark, B. C. The Champion Family Some people whom I have known were proud of their ancestry, their family tree They seemed to find great pleasure in making it known to < ■> they were descenderitsii parentage, and would boastfully enumerate their many accomplishments. I too, respect and honor those who by their exalted character and valor have proven themselves worthy. However, it is not of distinguished parentage I desire to boast, but to speak with laudable pride of a family whose equal in many respects would be hard to find. -A family one thousand strong, united, prosperous and contented. I refer to the Champion Family, a family possessed with the Champion Spirit, among whom no contentions exist, but the spirit of co-operation and loyalty to each other and to their employers predominates every action. This is, to a great extent, due to the courteous and agreeable treatment of the t mployees by the manager and his executives. M. A. Kelly said, 'Small kindness, small courtesies, small considerations, habitually practiced in in our social intercourse give a greater charm to the character than the display of great talents and accomplishments.' Kindness, courtesy and consideration in our business affairs pay greater dividends than is supposed by a casual observer. May this spirit of good will continue with the years to come and go, may no discord or dissension arise among us. but as our family shall grow in numbers, may peace and harmony prevail. Bear in mind the warning and advice given to the waring tribes by Citche Manito. the 'Great Spirit' in the song of Hiawatha.
