  • Annual Meeting of The Champion Relief Association t 6.00 P. M. Monday, March i the regular Annual meeting his Association, was held in Gaiety Theatre, about one dred of the five hundred nbers attending. res. G. W. Phillips called the ting to order and gave a f history of the progress of Association since its incept- five years ago. When the time ie for the election of officers the ensuing year, Mr. Phillips hwas nominated for the office of Fres. and would have been un- S.animously elected but declined I'ko be a candidate, much to the J Tegretol'the members present. The following officers were ■sleeted, a ballot being first taken g the number of direct- I ors from nine to eleven. Pres. m>. L. Holland. V. Pres. A. D Wood, Sec. J. T. Duckworth, •Treas. G. M. Trostle. Directors ~Tm. Battison, Joseph Clark, R. Sprang, W. A. Trammell, J. vT. Lilly, Luther McKay, J. L. Sanborn, E. M. Geier. L. H. "lark, Clyde Hildebrand and Chas. Sparks. On account of limited space ;we can only give a brief resume I the Auditors report, shewing he prosperous financial condi- ion of the Association: NSl'RASCE DF.l'ARTMENT ived from members $ 3664.24 Sick and Death Benefits paid to members ROFITS ... $ 8'>7 78 fOOD SALES ACCT. ales . . $ 4083.49 feed on hand iefaad 'urchase ace o tiling and Ge 1591 ■>-i.',M One of the particularly noti ciable features of the Auditors report is that the total amount paid in by members amounts to $3725.25 and members have received in benefits and dividends the sum of $4182.08, or $456.83 more than amount collected from them. In addition to this the Association had in hand at the time the Auditors statement was made the sum of $3248.60 SAFETY FIRST The Sulphite Digester The Jolbert Digester Lining Co. completed the work of linin the new digester on the sixth of April, six days ahead of schedule. The first cook will be put on about the time we go to press. This digester will be known as No. 3 and the old No. 3 as No. 4. The Machine Shop Crew "scored another one" in that they finished the castings, piping and fittings for the digester ahead of the time allotted to them for the completion of this work. "Where are you working these days?" said a workman to Hildebrand. "On the 'Pipe Organ'" said Clyde, meaning, of course, the intricate system of piping on the new digester. The various crews of pipe-fitters have all had a hand in this work, still it is our prediction that when "Organists" Hyatt and Flynn get ready for the first "recital" they will find the instrument perfectly in tune. The replacing of the section of flooring around the top of this vessel was done in a manner which reflects credit upon the Iron-Workers, Carpenters and Masons. They were all ".b.hn- ny-on-the-spot." The Autoclaves The Manitowoc Engineering Co. have advised that, due to the failure of castings in arriving at their plant, this installation will be delayed two weeks. This will give our crews time to make better preparation for placing the apparatus. The crew foremen will be lined up, like sprinters in a hundred yard dash awaiting the word "Go." The work of removing the old leach- tanks, in connection with this job, was completed twelve days ahead of schedule, the total time being one thousand working hours less than was required for removing the same number of tanks two years ago. This saving can be attributed to better methods, the efficient work of the wrt eking crew under Mr. Duncan, and to the co-operation of the yard and switching crews. The steel structural material arrived one week ahead of time and Westmoreland is shaping his course preparing to beat the schedule given him. SAFETY FIRST The Belting Department Don't forget to notify 'the Belt man when putting up ' a new drive, when replacing pulleys on any drive with pulleys of a different diameter, or when making any change that results in changing the length of any belt. Don't'forget, when replacing an old belt with a new one, to take the old belt and card to the store room and. see that your department gets credit for the same. The old card is your requisition for a new belt. Remember that one end of each Record of Disabling Accidents BY DEPARTMENTS FOR March, 1915 width of belt on hand in the .store room, is already fit tec with fasteners of the. size and type best adapted for use on that especial belt. All that do is to measure . off the exact length of belt required (you will find the length listed on the "Belt Card") and cut it off at the "Belt Table." If you use this device and the least bit of common sense you cannot help but cut it square. In a piece of burlap attached to the fastener you will find enough rivets of the proper size to complete the splice. Don't use the wrong- size. A card explaining this feature is posted near this table and in conspicuous places throughout the mill. When an employee comes to the store room for more than one belt, off . the same roll, it is of ihe utmost importance that he refer to these instructions and follow them. A safe method is to use the same type of fastener and the same size rivets you find attached to the belt. SAFETY FIRST The Sulphite Blow Pit Notwithstanding ■ the delays due to inclement weather the Carpenters and Millwrights will have this work completed on time. Space forbids us going into details and describing this work as it deserves. There was a business-like spirit in evidence all the time which cannot help but reduce the cost of this installation. In other words. there was some ginger put into this job.
