  • CANTON. NORTH CAROLINA, CAN CANTONITES PAY CASH? The Relief Association Proposes to Help its Members in the Battle Against the "HIGH COST OF LIVING" VOTE TO BE TAKEN ON THIS QUESTION A History of the Proposed Project: This Solution of the Problem is Offered After Conferences With the Men and with the Merchants. ratfe the Direc Relief Associat on, signed by CM a Man's a Fool or Drunken When He Tries to Get A SHOCK James Whitcomb Riley, the author of "When ! Punkin and the Fodder's in the Shock." wl; :k- When it's muddy in the river 'till it colors up the stock- An' it light'nin's an' and it. thunders with an awful roarin' shock An' the 'lectrie men get busy and the switchman's watchin, "Sloans" An' his nerves an' muscles tighten—there's a tremble in his bones, An' a motley crowd they greet him—they get in the "switchman's" re For it's then that "Carolina" is a droppin off her load. To the switch-board they come rushin,' an' with grins his troubles mc An' he yells at them, "Look out there! or you're apt to get a shock!" From wood-room an' from bleachin'-room they come the mob to swell, From the acid room in sulphite (where they manufacture smell) The engineer's on duty, yet they bungle up the stairs To reach the place the switch-board man is now a savin' prayers. Then is the time the questions come a sailin' all sroun'— They shout to him in chorus, "Say, how long will we be down?" O, it sets him all a tremble, when he gazes on this flock, For he knows that 'round the switches there are currents that will shock, With one eye on the ammeter—the other readin' volts And both upon the phase lamps, up an' down the place he bolts: He knows the time is comin'—he will be there at the switch — An' it's bound to make him nervous as a seventh yearly itch. He's beard the circuit breaker going off just like a gun— There's currents chasin' currents and the work is far from fun — O, it makes this man red-headed -He would like to throw a rock At the gang up at the switch-board, tryin' hard to get a shock. If you're daily preachin' safety and it isn't all a bluff That you're springin' on your bosses-then you won't get in a huff. If we signal you of danger an' we try to save your life An' let you stay with brother, father, mother, kids and wife. It'll make us mighty happy just to think you ain't in smoke, An' our local undertaker cannot play his little joke— You would sure be in his clutches—'twouldn't be no job for Doc— . It is their wish to hel serving industrious man who happens to be "up against it" and not to encourage improvidence. Some of the Board, who will be known as the Welfare Committee, are to keep a careful watch over the loan department and. should they find that loans are proving a detriment to any man, they reserve the right to order their discontinuance. Regarding unpaid orders standing against any man in the time office, it is expected that some arrangement can and will fee made, so that these orders can be taken up by the deduction of a certain sum each pay-day, so that the workmen, who have given these orders will not be wholly without funds during the time these deductions are being made.- In this way he may secure enough money through the loan department to meet his demands. This project should receive the careful consideration of the members and it is hoped that everyone of them will SAFETY FJRST—— The Champion Kind Give me the man who can hold on when others let go; who pushes ahead when others turn; who stiffens up when others weaken; who advances when others retreat, who knows no such word as "can't" or "give up;" and I will show you a man who will win in the end, no matter who opposes him, no matter what obstacles confront him. —Mar- den.
