  • The front page of 'The Ruralite' (Sylva, N.C.) newspaper for April 7, 1931 featured two articles that, combined, expressed both optimism and loss. The page contained articles about Sylva's potential as a gateway to the new Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 'Sylva Is Designated as Entrance to Park' and also announced the death of Horace Kephart (1862-1931), a preeminent proponent of the national park, in an automobile accident in an article titled 'Noted Writer Killed in an Auto Accident.' Two other headlines visible in the image read 'Value of Lime Proven by Tests' and 'Pastures, Legumes Cheap Dairy Feeds.'
