  • wcu_travel-15.jp2
  • This picture highlights the Main Street of Sylva, N.C., as seen on September 18, 1915. Taken from the vantage point of the new Jackson County Courthouse, completed in February 1914 and situated on a hillside overlooking the town, the photograph shows several landmarks. The county's Civil War monument, which was dedicated on that day, is visible to the left as a statue on its pedestal. The Sylva Graded School, a large building rising above the trees, is seen at the far left. The Sylva Collegiate Institute, a private school that opened its doors in 1900, is obscured by buildings and foliage, but was located on a hill to the right of the Graded School. The spire of the Sylva First Baptist Church may be seen to the far center right. The area seen in the foreground at the foot of the Courthouse hill was a residential area.
