Stories of mountain folk broadcast: 2013-07-20
-
Amy’s story “Mother’s Biscuits” begins the show, relating the way her mother made biscuits in a wood cook stove. The story is accompanied by “As the Deer” by David Bauer. On Creative Corner, Doreyl’s guest is once again Dan Pittillo. He talks about a project he is working on to catalog unrecorded plant species on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the various biomes in western North Carolina. He also addresses some of the plants that are being threatened by diseases, insects, and other dangers. “Forked Deer” by David Holt follows the interview. On Stories of Mountain Folk, Amy continues her interview with Sally Gwinn Kesler of Franklin. Sally talks about her time at the Penland School of Crafts and spending time maintaining the Appalachian Trail in the early 1950s. The interview is followed by “Wild Mountain Thyme” by the Muses. On Coming Around the Mountain, Sean Botzenhart interviews Morgan Nichols, a sophomore at Western Carolina University studying middle grades education. Morgan shares why she wants to be a teacher as well as her desire to combine education with her love of nature. “Lend a Helping Heart” by the Smoky Mountain Boys follows the interview. On Down Another Road, an interview with T.J. Holland discussing the history of the Qualla Boundary from October 13, 2012, is rebroadcast. The interview is followed by “Cherokee,” which features the Native American flute. The show concludes with “Clear Creek” by Appalachian Fire.
