Asheville, N. C, Nov. 29th, 1899. To the Committee on Publicity and Promotion of the Appalachian National Park Association. Gentlemen:— In view of the fact that the Association purposes from time to time to issue circulars containing arguments in favor of the National Park movement at close intervals duringthe following months, it seems desirable that some plan should be devised to limit the expenses of printing and mailing to the lowest minimum. It has, therefore, occurred to me to propose to your Committee that inasmuch as Southern Pictures & Pencilling has been nominated as the of.fie- ial prgan of the Association, that I should arrange to have the publication issued with greater frequency, taking advantage of the post- office privileges accorded to it, and incorporating in the publication all the official documents of a character suitable for such incorporation in an official organ. By this means, I would expect to make this part of the work almost self-supporting, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx in view 0? the fact that a considerable portion of the Magazine at the'back part would contain advertising matter which would go largely to pay for its production. Should your Committee entertain this proposition, and would give me an idea of the number of copies that might be required, I / would take the matter up with the merchants and other advertisers and T I see what could be done in the way of supporting the official paper so that the publication of the official documents and the mailing of

The Appalachian National Park Association was formed in 1899 for the purpose of promoting the idea of a national park in the eastern U.S. In this 14-page communication written within weeks of its organization, the association adopted the magazine, “Southern Pictures and Pencillings,” as the official organ of the association. The publication was produced by A. H. McQuilkin, a Chicago-based editor who moved to Asheville, North Carolina in the mid-1890s and became involved with the association.
