  • This printed self-mailing note was sent out by the Southern Highlanders, Inc. to announce the opening, on May 1, 1936, of their new retail shop on the lower concourse of the International Building, Rockefeller Center, New York City. The Southern Highlanders, Inc. was a craft marketing cooperative initiated in 1935 by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in consultation with the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild. The Southern Highlanders, Inc. operated shops in Norris, Tennessee and Rockefeller Center in New York City. The TVA was the major stockholder in the corporation with other craft centers and individuals buying five dollar shares. Around 1951 the organization merged with the Southern Highland Craft Guild.
