NETHERLAND INDIES CAPITULATED f~\ N March 9, 1942, when Java gave up, the entire Netherland Indies offered an unconditional surrender. Prior to the capitulation of the Netherland Indies, in December last year, the Japanese Forces commenced the operations from British North Borneo, then extended the field of operations to the Celebes, Sumatra, Dutch New Guinea and then to Java. During that time, the landing of the Japanese Paratroops at Menado in the Celebes and at Palembang, in Sumatra is something remarkable deserving applause. After Holland had been subjugated by Germany, there remained a phantom government juggled by the United States and Britain just to satisfy their fruitless designs in the Orient, leaving the Netherland Indies as orphans. The reaction of the inhabitants was to welcome the invasion of the Japanese Forces. If they had been subjugated by our armed forces, then it can be said to have been the will of God. Ang mga taga Haba ay malugod na tumulong sa mga kawal Hapones. The Inhabitants of lava cheerfully help the Japanese Forces. Sa Sourabaya, Haba, ang mga mamamayan ay malaki ang pagnanais na matutuhan ang Wikang Hapones. At Sourabaya, Java the natives are eager to learn the Japanese language. Ang mga kawal na Habanes ay lumutulong sa Hukbong Hapones sa imbakan ng langis sa Medan, Sumatra. The native troops of Java cooperate with the Japanese Forces at the Fuel Compound at Medan, Sumatra. Ang mga taga Batavia, Haba, ay nagulai sa mga balita tungkol sa mga tagumpay ng Hapon. The inhabitants of Batavia, Java are astounded with the victorious Japanese war news.

This edition of Japanese propaganda magazine, “Shin Seiki” (text in Tagalog and English), published by the Department of Information, was brought back to America by Carr and Ruth Hooper who were interned at Santo Tomas Internment Camp in Manila, Philippines from January 1942 to February 1945. Hand-written notes made by Carr refer to several photos and captions. The camp, also known as the Manila Internment Camp, was run by the Japanese military during World War II and housed over 3,000 internees from January 1942 until February 1945.
