Sawyer Motor Company Building 1925-1926. Eugene Coston Sawyer standing in front of building
-
Eugene Coston Sawyer standing in front of Sawyer Motor Company service entrance. The building is reinforced-concrete with brick exterior (2-story). Eugene Coston Sawyer opened the first automobile dealership in Asheville in 1914, founded Sawyer Motor Company, and retired in 1954 at the age of 85. He is credited with bringing the first car to Western North Carolina. According to his granddaughter, Sharon Heim, Mr. Sawyer had the parts delivered by train and built the car by hand. He was considered an "Automotive Pioneer" in Asheville. The Urban Trail of Downtown Asheville features a plaque in his honor on the corner of Market Street across from the current Magnolia's Restaurant.
